Most Hongkongers wants to produce renewable energy at home - WWF

According to a survey by a global conservation body, most Hongkongers are willing to produce renewable energy at home, for example by investing in rooftop solar power generators if utility companies agree to buy the surplus electricity generated.

Mr Prentice Koo from the WWF, which interviewed more than 1,000 people by phone, said that the study showed a high awareness in the city of opting for renewable energy over fossil fuels in electricity generation.

He said that the government should open up the electricity grid and offer feed-in tariffs for private households or institutions that make use of nature to produce power.

The suggestions followed the March launch of the government’s public consultation on the future of the electricity market, which is dominated by two major suppliers, CLP Power and HK Electric. The consultation ends on June 30th.

Mr Koo said that “The market should be opened up and allow more people to join in the development of renewable energy. This is a more environmentally friendly way to produce electricity and will make the market healthier.”

According to the survey, 83.1% of respondents agreed that the government should start to replace fossil fuels such as coal, gas and petroleum with renewable energy for electricity generation in order to tackle climate change, global warming and air pollution.

Some 83.7% said that the electricity grid should be opened up to more parties to develop renewable energy, while 53.3% said they would consider installing devices to generate their own electricity, if the power companies promise to purchase the excess.

Solar power becomes dazzlingly cheap for new plants - Mr Naimi

Mr Ali Al Naimi, oil minister of Saudi Arabia, said at a climate change conference in Paris last week that “I believe solar will be even more economic than fossil fuels.”

Recent bids in Jordan confirmed last year’s results from Dubai, solar is now cheaper than gas-fired power in this region, with major implications for energy strategies.

In Manaar Energy’s 2012 report, 'Sunrise in the Desert' published in collaboration with PwC and the Middle East Solar Industry Association, we were optimistic on the future of solar power in the region and saw it as competitive with power generation from oil or from more expensive gas. Costs have halved in just three years, meaning solar can now beat all conventional generation apart from the very cheapest gas.

Bids in Jordan’s recent solar auction were just over 6 US cents per kilowatt-hour, slightly above the record 5.84 cents from Acwa Power last November for the 200 MW second phase of Dubai’s Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar park near Bab Al Shams. Egypt, struggling with a gas and power crisis, is up next with a reported 6,500 MW of solar deals.

Solar prices should continue to fall because of improvements in manufacturing and installation, and steady gains in efficiency. There is also the possibility of breakthroughs, such as the recently announced possibility of perovskite crystals replacing silicon, which could be cheaper and capture a broader range of the sun’s light.

What does this mean for Middle East countries’ energy sectors?

There is no need for over-elaborate national renewable energy strategies. Some of these can even be counterproductive if they obstruct progress on building real projects. Petroleum-poor countries such as Jordan should seize the opportunity now to boost their economic and energy security.

Utilities need to revamp their plans to include a large share of solar power in new generation. Any country burning oil for power, such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Iran, should plan to replace this with solar as much as possible. Although liquefied natural gas prices have dropped sharply, territories using imported LNG, Kuwait again, Dubai, Egypt and in the future Bahrain and Jordan, can also replace some expensive imported fuel.

The first generation of regional solar power depended on a few heavily subsidised pilot projects. We are now entering the second generation, when solar will often be the cheapest choice on its own merits.

Realising the full benefits of the Middle East’s solar potential requires a third generation that needs to solve two key issues. The first is meeting the need for electricity outside the periods of maximum solar output – particularly the early evening peak demand in summer, when the sun has set but residents come home and turn on air conditioners, lights, televisions and cookers.

Solutions to this issue of intermittency could include grid interconnections to other countries with different demand patterns. Batteries can store electricity, with some exciting, although perhaps over-hyped, recent discoveries that could bring down costs.

Ahmedabad airport to go on solar power mode - Report

Times of India reported that PM Mr Narendra Modi's thrust on solar power has found a place in Ahmedabad airport. In a bid to bring down operational expenses and save on power costs, Airports Authority of India is planning to install solar panels on the roof of both domestic and international terminals of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel international airport in next 1 year.

Besides installing solar panels, AAI will put in LED lights, solar powered street lights, and five star rating energy appliances and conduct periodic energy audits to with an aim to save 6% energy this year.

Senior AAI official said that "AAI has decided to implement energy saving initiatives at few airports in the country including Ahmedabad. This year we expect to save 6% energy compared to last year through our energy saving plan. Next year we are targeting at least 8%."

Ahmedabad airport's current consumption is 25,500 MW per year which on an average costs around INR 21 crore.

AAI official said that "The process has already begun. Lights on runway have already been replaced with LED lights for energy saving. Next up solar panels will be installed on the top of roofs of both the terminals. The capacity of these solar panels will be of 700 KW which will be used to fulfill the needs of lighting."

AAI also runs maintenance program to save electricity by shutting down lesser needed air conditioners at international terminal during the day when there is least flight movement.

Also AAI is installing solar powered barbed wires on the boundary of the airport to keep the monkeys and birds away from entering the airport area. AAI is also building the new administrative block which will come up near the residential colony of AAI. The three storey building will have the offices of AAI, DGCA, and Bureau of civil aviation security among others. The new building which is expected to get ready by end of this year has cost approx INR 10 crores and is spread over 660 square meter.

World's largest floating solar power plant in Japan

Published on Mon, 25 May 2015 47 times viewed

Xinhua reported that the construction on a 2.3 MW floating solar power plant has been completed on Sunday in Hyogo prefecture, western Japan, which is the world's largest floating solar power plant in terms of output.

The plant, coinvested by electronics giant Kyocera Corporation and Century Tokyo Leasing Corporation, is expected to generate 2, 680 MWh every year.

According to Kyocera, floating solar plants are superior to their land-based equivalents because of the cooling effects of the water, which allow the plants to have better power generating efficiency.

Mr Ichiro Ikeda, GM of Kyocera's solar energy marketing division, said that "As solar power is booming in Japan, land available for large solar plants is hard to come by, and solar power generation on water surfaces attracts more and more attention."

He said that "Besides higher efficiency, photovoltaic panels floating on the water could produce shades and reduce water evaporation and restrain algae growth, which is good for reservoirs."

The Japanese government has been vigorously promoting development of renewable power generation such as solar power since the 2011 Fukushima Nuclear disaster caused a power shortage around the country.

India's green power gets a big push - Report

Live Mint reported that the ministry of new and renewable energy, housed in New Delhi’s CGO Complex, was always the least visible of the infrastructure ministries, with many bureaucrats viewing it a step-down posting.

Not any more. Perceptions changed rapidly with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government taking over. It put renewable energy at the top of its agenda, in a bid to reduce India’s overwhelming dependence on coal-fuelled power.

The targets were ambitious. An earlier target of installing 20,000 MW of solar energy capacity by 2022 was raised fivefold to 100,000 MW. The government has also set a target of generating 60,000 MW in wind power capacity by then. Currently, renewable energy accounts for only 31,692 MW of India’s power generation capacity of 267,637 MW.

The ambitious targets have, in turn, led to a slew of innovative actions down the line.

Mr Piyush Goyal, minister of state with independent charge of power, coal and new and renewable energy, said that “We are looking at innovative financing models with an open mind. Very soon, NTPC Ltd will come out with a global offering of rupee-denominated bonds. Coal India Ltd today has sufficient funds, but it has aggressive green plans and may come out with some offerings for financing its renewable energy thrust. It could be green bonds. All options are open.”

He has been tasked with the job of translating PM Mr Narendra Modi’s vision into a reality.

State-owned NTPC plans to raise USD 500 million each from its first global rupee and green bonds. The USD 1 billion bond sale, approved by the board of India’s largest power producer, ties in with the government’s aim of raising low-cost, long-term funds to help finance its renewable energy objectives.

Also, the green energy push is expected to open up employment opportunities, with the government working on a strategy to turn some 20,000 unemployed graduates into entrepreneurs to help it meet its solar power generation targets, a plan it will implement in concert with state administrations. This is in addition to the government’s plan to train around 50,000 people in areas related to solar power.

This is how it will work: State governments will choose graduates, preferably engineers, who will then be trained by the central government for around three-six months to equip them with the entrepreneurial and technical skills to set up solar power plants with a capacity of 1MW each, to create 20,000MW of solar capacity. While the states will identify the land, the Union government may provide some subsidy under the National Clean Energy Fund for setting up these projects, each requiring an investment of INR 6.5 crore.

Mr Goyal said that “We are looking at developers coming up and investing in India, for which we will pay in dollars. We are looking at dollar tariffs very actively. This could be a game-changer for the renewable energy industry.”

Inviting dollar-based tariff bids along with sharing of hedging risks is expected to reduce the solar power tariff from around INR 6.70 per unit currently to around INR 4.37 per unit, with the firms freed from foreign exchange risk. The government is looking to provide green power at less than INR 4.50 a unit. This comes in the backdrop of concerns over India’s ambitious targets to crank up solar and wind energy production, thanks to the precarious finances of the primary customers, the state government-owned distribution utilities.

Citicore Power plans an IPO - Official

A ranking official said that Citicore Power, a sister company of construction giant Megawide, Construction Corporation, is set to go public when it has achieved a sizeable portfolio of renewable energy.

Mr Oliver Tan, CFO of Citicore, said that “An IPO is possible for Citicore Power as soon as we accumulate or build a sizeable portfolio of renewable energy. Sizeable would be around 700-800 megawatts.”

Initially, Citicore is planning to roll out 322 MW of renewable energy capacity in the 4 to 5 years.

Mr Tan said that the power projects in the pipeline include solar, hydropower and biomass.

He said, referring to the tie-up announced last week for solar farms in Luzon and Visayas which the two companies plan to build in the next 2 years, that “We have a total of 250 MW solar farm to be rolled out within the year together with Solar Philippines.”

Mr Tan said that alongside this, Citicore Power is also planning a 60-MW hydropower project in Luzon, which the company plans to start construction by early next year and complete in roughly 4 years time.

He added that “We also have 12 MW biomass project in Visayas to be rolled out also early next year, this would take roughly 14 to 15 months to complete. So that would be a total of 322 MW.”

The company, serving as Megawide’s first foray into the lucrative power sector, prefers renewable energy projects.

India gears up for 3 GW solar power projects auction

Clean Technica reported that the solar power market in India is heating up rapidly, with a number of record-setting auctions being planned under the country’s National Solar Mission.

The Indian government is planning to launch a 3 GW solar power projects auction through the subsidiary of the country’s largest power producer, NTPC Limited. The global tender is expected to be floated this year, either all at once or in batches.

NTPC Vidyut Vyaar Nigam will be authorized to float tender and complete the selection process. NVVN will also buy the electricity generated by the solar power projects through 25-year power purchase agreements. NVVN is NTPC’s subsidiary that takes care of any surplus electricity generated from the latter’s thermal power plants by selling it on the open market. NVVN will bundle the solar and surplus thermal power together in a ratio of 2:1. This bundled electricity will then be sold to utilities across the country.

The price of the bundled power will be sold at a price lower than the price of 3 units of solar power. The price of bundled power is expected to be significantly lower than the tariff enjoyed by currently operational solar power projects. This would not only be because of the continued fall in raw materials and equipment costs, but also because of the structure of the auction.

For the first time in India, a solar power projects auction will take place in dollars instead of rupee. The government will build a separate corpus to hedge against fluctuation in the value of the dollar in the long-term. Through a dollar-based auction the government hopes to reduce the tariff considerably, hopefully in-line with the recent record low bids of around 8 cents per kWh.

Wind and solar accounts for all new capacity in April - FERC

NA Wind Power reported that renewable energy sources once again dominated the latest federal monthly update on new electrical generating capacity brought into service in the US.

According to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's office of energy projects, wind and solar accounted for all new generating capacity placed into service in April. In addition to six new units of solar totaling 50 MW of installed capacity, wind contributed 300 MW from the Hereford-2 Wind Farm Project and 211 MW from Mesquite Creek Wind Project. Both wind farms are located in Texas.

Further, FERC said that wind, solar, geothermal and hydropower combined have provided 84.1% of the 1,900 MW of new US electrical generating capacity placed into service during the first third of 2015. This includes 1,170 MW of wind 61.5%, 362 MW of solar 19.1%, 45 MW of geothermal steam 2.4% and 21 MW of hydropower 1.1%. The balance was provided by 5 natural gas units.

FERC has reported no new capacity for the year to date from biomass sources, nor any from coal, oil or nuclear power.

FERC reports renewable energy sources now account for 17.05% of total installed operating generating capacity in the US, water 8.55%, wind 5.74%, biomass 1.38%, solar 1.05% and geothermal steam 0.33%.

Renewable energy capacity is now greater than that of nuclear and oil combined. In fact, the installed capacity of wind power alone has now surpassed that of oil. In addition, total installed operating generating capacity from solar has now reached and surpassed the 1% threshold, a 10-fold increase since December 2010.

Mr Ken Bossong, ED of SUN DAY Campaign, said that "Members of Congress and state legislators proposing to curb support for renewable energy, such as renewable portfolio/electricity standards and the federal production tax credit and investment tax credit, are swimming against the tide.”

He said that "With renewable energy's clear track record of success and the ever-worsening threat of climate change, now is not the time to pull back from these technologies but rather to greatly expand investments in them."

Kinetica Solar brought 39.2 MW Raventhorpe Solar Farm online

Solar Power Portal reported that solar energy developer Kinetica has brought its 39.2MW Raventhorpe Solar Farm online in a development with steel giant TATA Steel.

The 78.5 hectares site was constructed at a cost of GBP 48 million and Kinetica has struck a deal with TATA Steel, whose works are located nearby the solar farm, which involves the manufacturer buying electricity through a rolling PPA to meets its renewable energy procurement strategy.

Kinetica formed a JV partnership with EPC contractors WElink in order to construct the site using panels supplied by manufacturer China Triumph CTIEC.

The developer first unveiled plans for the site to local residents in July last year, however the project was threatened by the government change in policy to Contracts for Difference mid-way through its construction, something which Kinetica director Mr Nathan Welch said was potentially disastrous for the firm.

Speaking to Solar Power Portal this morning, Mr Welch commended the contractors in connecting the site prior to April’s ROC deadline after construction was only allowed to start in January.

He said that “I think the most challenging thing aside from financing the project after the government did [change policy] was actually constructing it in the time frames. WElink need to be commended in building such a huge project in such a tight time frame.”

Raventhorpe has also been developed with low visual impact in mind and Kinetica has worked on the biodiversity of the site, starting an expansive planting programme and creating a number of wildlife habitats to encourage native species to return to the site.

Minnesota regulators approves a USD 250 mln solar power project

The Associated Press reported that Minnesota regulators have approved a USD 250 million solar power project that is set to be the biggest in the state.

Edina-based Geronimo Energy plans to install solar panels at as many as 21 sites in Minnesota as part of its Aurora Solar Project. Geronimo officials plan to spread out the sites to make sure cloudy weather doesn’t affect the system.

The Aurora project would increase Minnesota’s solar output sevenfold. Plans call for its completion next year and for the power to be sold to Xcel Energy.

The panels are set to be installed on sites near existing electric substations, eschewing costly transmission lines. Many of the sites are farmland.

Construction starts on largest solar array in Kentucky

The Fort Campbell Courier reported that a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of a capped landfill on Fort Campbell, Wednesday, marked the next step in the installation’s renewable energy plan.

The ceremony marked the beginning of construction of the largest solar array in Kentucky. The multimillion dollar project will install a ground-mounted solar panel system near the corner of Market Garden Road and Screaming Eagle Boulevard.

Once fully operational, the solar array will produce 5 MW of energy, or enough to power 463 homes. Preparation to install a solar array began in 2012 when Fort Campbell established a renewable energy plan. The reasoning for establishing such a plan came from directives set forth in the American Renewable Energy Act, which requires 25% of energy consumed by federal installations to be produced by renewable means by 2025.

Mr Rick McCoy, Garrison Energy Manager, said that “This addition of renewable energy sources will lessen Fort Campbell’s reliance on coal-powered energy provided by the Tennessee Valley Authority. This change signals a positive impact in the years to come for the environment and future generations.”

He said that “The fossil fuels and everything alone that we’re not burning and putting into the air makes this thing very attractive. Not tearing down the mountains to get to coal instead of your children looking down into a valley where the mountain used to be, they’ll be looking up at the mountain.”

He added that “Phase One of the project will provide approximately 1.9 MW of energy capable of plugging in directly into the Fort Campbell power grid. This phase should be complete sometime in September, depending on weather.”

California to provide homes with free solar panels

Gazette Review reported that in California, companies that need to offset some of their carbon emissions are paying for disadvantaged neighborhoods to get free solar panels installed on the homes.

The state’s cap and trade law forces businesses to pay, per ton, for their carbon emissions. The money gathered with this tax is then used to offset the business’s carbon emissions elsewhere. As the San Francisco Chronicle explains, the initiative, which is run by Oakland nonprofit Grid Alternatives, the effort will install home solar arrays in disadvantaged neighborhoods, using USD 14.7 million raised through California’s cap-and-trade system for reining in greenhouse gas emissions.

California already is the best state in the country if you want to go solar, with plenty of government incentives, paired with innovative companies and progressive residents who help the green technology get a strong foothold on the community. Still, even in California, the majority of solar power users are the upper-middle class and the wealthy, due to its steep upfront costs.

Grid Alternatives hopes to swing that balance around to make it more fair, and with the extra money it has thanks to these California businesses, it will be able to install solar panels on 1,600 homes by the end of next year, for free. In fact, anyone who lives in a disadvantaged neighborhood, as designated by the state, qualifies.

And yes, it is free. Totally free. As the Chronicle said that “Most homeowners are asked to make small contributions for the installation, such as agreeing to feed the crew installing the array, or agreeing to help with the installation themselves. Otherwise, it’s free.” In fact, it’s better than free, the systems will save homeowners between USD 400 and USD 1,000 a year in electricity costs.

While the Grid Alternatives program is great, it has a ways to go before it can be called stable. Presently, the system relies on donations from solar companies and volunteer labor. It needs to be made more streamlined, better funded and permanent before it can be seen as a real threat to climate change.

Mr Majithia inaugurates 2.10MW solar power plant near Indo-Pak border

Times of India reported that Mr Bikram Singh Majithia, New & Renewable Energy Minister, inaugurated 2.10 MW solar power plant costing INR 16.40 crore in border village Chhina Bidhi Chand thereby paving the way for large scale investment in solar energy sector along with fencing on 550 kms long this international border.

Talking to media persons he said that the project was being set up by an NRI Mr Ranbir Singh Chhina of Abundant Energy Private Limited.

He said that solar energy was one of the most abundant energy sources in the state, which averages around 300 sunny days per year and now the time had come to take full advantage of that potential to provide better access to clean energy, and reduce the dependence on fossil fuels to promote sustainable economic growth. He said that Punjab farmers who made India self reliant on food grain front were now all set to become entrepreneurs by harnessing solar power from their fields.

He said that keeping in view the ever increasing response to state government's efforts to promote renewable energy, a new 'land on lease' scheme has been launched and in less than two weeks period around 5000 acres of land has been offered by active/passive farmers and NRIs, which would be further given to investors on 30 years lease that too on INR 35 to 50 thousands lease per year per acre. He said that he has initiated this scheme after studying the problem being faced by farmers. Similarly, a farm level solar power plants scheme having one to 2.5 MW generation capacity was being launched shortly offering 500 MW such projects.

Briefly outlining the achievements of the State in solar power front, Mr Majithia revealed that in just two years period the solar power generation had been enhanced 25 times as earlier it was 9 MW and now crossed 225 MW. He said that 24 new Projects of 229 MW capacity plus 65 MW rooftop projects with an investment of Rs. 2100 crore were all set to be started soon.

He said that besides world renowned companies NRIs were also coming forward to grab this win-win situation and till date only NRIs had set up 42.30 MW solar power projects with a joint cost of INR 244 crore and overall total investment in this sector in last two years was more than INR 1500 crore. He expressed confidence that by 2017, the Punjab will touch 1000 MW renewable power generation in state.

Hallo zonnepanelen (en zonne energie) fans.

Enige tijd geleden meldde ik al dat ik 10 panelen (260wP), dus in totaal 2.6 kWp gekocht had. De paar dagen in maart tel ik even niet mee.

Opbrengst in april 343 kWh. (Dit was een extreem zonnige maand)
Opbrengst in mei 381 kWh.
