Behind the Sprint–Altice Deal

Sprint and Altice are navigating changing industries
Sprint (S) and Altice USA (ATUS) announced recently that they were forging a partnership that they portrayed as beneficial to each company at this moment, when they’re navigating changing industries. Sprint, a mobile network operator, is working to expand and enhance its network as it tries to attract more subscribers and also improve its subscriber retention. Among the top four US (SPY) wireless operators, Sprint recorded the highest postpaid phone subscriber churn in 3Q17. Churn is a measure of subscriber loss.
As for Altice USA, the US-based subsidiary of the Europe-based (EFA) multinational telecom group Altice, is keen to sweeten its offers at this moment when pay-TV companies are grappling with a loss of subscribers because of cord-cutting.
Altice to venture into wireless business
The deal between Sprint and Altice would allow Altice to provide wireless services to its cable customers using Sprint’s network. As such, the Sprint-Altice talkss appear to mirror the reseller agreement that Verizon (VZ) struck years ago with cable providers Comcast (CMCSA) and Charter Communications (CHTR).
Comcast launched its wireless service this year on the Verizon’s network, and Charter’s wireless service on the same network is expected to launch this year. Cable companies are expanding into the wireless market while wireless companies such as AT&T (T) and Verizon are also increasing their media exposure. AT&T seeks to acquire Time Warner (TWX), the parent company of CNN.
Deal to help boost Sprint’s network
As for Sprint, the arrangement with Altice would help it improve its network. For example, the deal gives Sprint special access to Altice’s cable infrastructure to transmit wireless data.
