Nokia Corp. (NOK, NOK1V.HE) remains dedicated to Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) operating system in its smartphones, pushing back against recent reports that the Finnish handset maker is open to using Google Inc.'s (GOOG) Android platform.
Nokia launched the latest editions to its Lumia line in the U.S. in November, marking a critical bet that relies heavily on Microsoft's new operating system, Windows Phone 8. Nokia was once the world's largest maker of mobile phones, but it has struggled to compete in the smartphone era with Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Samsung Electronics Co. (SSNHY, 005930.SE)
"We are, through and through, 100% committed to Microsoft and the Windows platform," said Chris Weber, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Nokia, in an interview Wednesday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. He countered reports published on blogs that Nokia might be interested in using Android in the future.
Nokia is hoping the new line of smartphones will help re-establish the company after a string of financial losses. Mr. Weber declined to comment on the sales performance of the devices.
The Lumia is one of several Windows Phone 8 devices available and when the first generation of Nokia's Windows phones launched, sales were considered a disappointment.
Mr. Weber said he isn't concerned about others making phones for the Windows platform. Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) announced at CES that it would offer its first Windows 8 phones this summer from HTC Corp. (HTCXF, 2498.TW) and Samsung.
"We want that ecosystem to grow," Mr. Weber said.
Nokia won't shift to unify its phone models, he said, and will continue to offer different phone models through the different carriers, as opposed to Apple and Samsung, which both offer the same model phone to all the carriers.
He declined to comment on whether Nokia could eventually produce a tablet.
"We are eyeing that space with interest but just haven't announced anything," he said.
