Komt omdat je het spel gewoonweg niet snapt meneer,ze drukten hem naar 4,04 vandaag om nog laag van de paniekverkopers op te rapen,en dan naar boven kopen...dat houd in dat er morgen duidelijk iets op poten staat.

Find True Religion In A World Full Of Crocs (TRLG, CROX, LULU)

When it comes to apparel, it is nice to be the fad of the season, but all companies would love to have their brand turn into a long-term trend. A fad is just a temporary fashion. A trend, on the other hand, is longer term and can be perceived as the general direction in fashion. Granted even trends will eventually come to an end, but the potential for investors to make money from investing in trends is much more stable than catching a fad.

While fads can prove very lucrative on the way up, they tend to hit the proverbial wall and fall like a rock when the hype is over. This phenomenon can be seen in a number of stocks that have turned out to be fads and others that have withstood the test of time and are resulted in trends. Below I take a look at stocks that have gone in both directions.

    Faded Fads
Crocs (Nasdaq:CROX) - I never understood the hype over the colorful plastic sandals that are made to be worn on boats or the beach, but apparently I was alone in my thinking in 2006 and 2007. After going public in February 2006, Crocs stock jumped from $15 per share to a high of $75 in October 2007. I was lucky enough to own some shares of Crocs for clients, only due to their obsession with the rubber sandals. We were lucky enough to sell before the collapse in November 2007, but a lot of investors were not so lucky. As of the end of July, the stock is trading below $5 after yet another terrible quarterly earnings report. The first sign Crocs was about to run into trouble was the earnings report on the last day of October 2007. The stock fell the next day by 36% after the company reported weaker-than-expected guidance. A day earlier the stock closed at an all-time high, and since that time the stock has been disappointing on earnings each quarter and continues to move lower.

Heelys (Nasdaq:HLYS) - Heelys also makes a product for your feet, assuming you have the feet of a 12 year old. This is another product I never understood or owned. The maker of wheeled-footwear allows the wearer to either walk or glide on the wheels built into their shoes. I am sure you have seen a pre-teen sliding past you at the local mall. When the stock went public in December 2006 the product was all the rage. Heelys rallied from $30 to $40, but within a few months someone tripped up the shoe maker. By the first quarter of 2008 the stock was below $5 and has stayed there for most of the year. Just like Crocs, the beginning of the end occurred during an earnings announcement in which the company lowered future guidance in August 2007. (Find out more about earnings expectations in Earnings Forecasts: A Primer.)

    The Next Fad Victim
Lululemon Athletica (Nasdaq:LULU) - When the Canadian company went public in July 2007 it opened at $25 and shot up to $60 in less than three months. Since hitting a high in October, the stock has been in a downtrend and is in danger of breaking the $20 for the first time. The apparel maker offers athletic apparel for hipsters such as yoga-goers. While going to yoga may be a trend, it is looking more and more like Lululemon, and its fashion, may go the other way and become a fad.

    Trends with Staying Power
True Religion Apparel (Nasdaq:TRLG) - When jeans started selling for over $200, many including myself thought it would be a short-term fad, but True Religion and others have proved the demand remains for high-end jeans and that if you have the right product and can capitalize on your brand name, things can go really well. The premium denim maker was recently awarded the No.1 ranking from Apparel Magazine as the most profitable publicly traded apparel company. The key to True Religion's success has not only been its dominance in the jean sector, but it has now expanded into other areas of apparel and is opening its own branded boutiques. This company has been well run and could be a long-term trend in the apparel industry and possibly a takeover candidate down the road. (Read how to invest in potential acquisitions, see Trade Takeover Stocks With Merger Arbitrage.)

Deckers Outdoor (Nasdaq:DECK) - Decker is the maker of the Teva sandals and made its name in the past few years with its UGG brand sheep-skin boots. It doesn't matter if it is snowing in Aspen or sunny in LA, you will be able to find a pair of UGGs if you are in a hip part of town. The high-priced boots have been around for years and were favorites of surfers, but when a few celebrities in Hollywood began wearing them in the early 2000s, the public followed and the stock took off. Trading at $2 in 2002, Deckers ran up to over $160 last December. The recent market weakness has the stock back to the low $100s, but the last six years have proved UGGs were not merely a fad, but a fashion trend.

    Bottom Line
Investing in a company that has a popular product can certainly boost your portfolio. You will need to stay on top of it and jump ship before your profits do. There is nothing worse than walking the red carpet with a piece of clothing that went out of style two years ago. Stocks are the same way, follow the trends and you will be rewarded with a handsome portfolio.
