United States
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has reported that US telecoms giant AT&T Inc is considering an expansion into Europe, as part of an attempt to gain a competitive advantage overseas. Sources close to the company told the WSJ that AT&T is still ‘studying targets’, but that a deal could be announced before the end of the year. Although the carrier’s plans are still at a preliminary stage, both KPN Telecom (Royal KPN) of the Netherlands and UK mobile giant Everything Everywhere are said to be ‘on AT&T’s radar’, whilst Germany has also been highlighted as a desirable potential market.
TeleGeography notes that KPN is already 27.7% owned by Latin American telecom giant America Movil (AM), a company in which AT&T itself owns a minor stake. Further, AM owner Carlos Slim is known to be a close friend of AT&T chief Randall Stephenson. Meanwhile, Everything Everywhere is co-owned by Deutsche Telekom (DT) and France Telecom-Orange (FT-Orange).
