   Sittard/Leiden, The Netherlands, February 8, 2007 - DSM Biologics, a business unit of DSM Pharmaceuticals, and Dutch biotechnology company Crucell N.V. (Euronext, NASDAQ: CRXL; Swiss Exchange: CRX) announced today that they have further intensified their PER.C6® collaboration, by executing an agreement to expand the existing commercial relationship to include new classes of proteins, including biosimilar protein products. As part of the agreement, DSM paid Crucell an undisclosed amount in exchange for additional license rights and a higher share of future licensing income.
   
   Since December 2002, DSM Biologics and Crucell are jointly outlicensing PER.C6® human cell line to third parties as a production platform for monoclonal antibodies and recombinant proteins. The parties recently established the PERCIVIA PER.C6® Development Center in Cambridge, Mass, USA as a joint venture to further develop the PER.C6® cell line and provide a unique solution for the production of pharmaceutical proteins to licensees utilizing the PER.C6® human cell line in the biotech industry.

   Dit is het stukje waar het echt om gaat. Het zijn maar een paar regels maar niet onbelangrijk lijkt mij. Crucell gaat meer licentiegeld ontvangen.
   Verder gaan ze ook nieuwe producten ontwikkelen op basis van perc6

   EPO Biogenerics in regulated markets
   
   In contrast to the US FDA, the European Medicines Evaluation Agency has provided a rather clear regulatory framework of guidelines for “similar biological medicinal products” regarding quality and non-clinical and clinical issues with specific annexes for individual proteins. The erythropoietin specific annex comes into effect as of July 1, 2006. For the clinical part of EPO biosimilars, the guidance recommends a comparative single-dose pharmacokinetic study including pharmacodynamics. Furthermore, at least two adequately powered, randomized, parallel groou clinical trials should be conducted in a double-blind manner. Initial indication should be renal anemia, extrapolation to other approved indications might be possible. Safety of the biosimilar EPO should be demonstrated with at least 12-month comparative immunogenicity data. These data should be presented before marketing authorization. In addition, the EMEA provides Scientific Advice on development of biosimilars in a recently improved procedure.
   
   While the US market still seems to be prohibitive for EPO biogenerics due to the Amgen patent position, the European field now is rather open for EPO biogenerics. The publicly known, most advanced EPO development in the European Union was conducted by German company Bioceuticals, a spin-off from generic company Stada which now has a 13 % stake in Bioceuticals, but holds marketing rights for the biosimilar EPO. The company has finalized development and plans submission of the regulatory file with the EMEA by June 2006 after a recent pre-submission meeting with the EMEA. Based on the timelines of recent biosimilar approvals by the EMEA, this might enable marketing authorization of the first European EPO biosimilar in the second half of 2007. DSM Biologics of The Netherlands is manufacturing Stada's biosimilar erythropoietin. Apart from Stada/Bioceuticals, there are nine further companies with biosimilar EPO projects in various stages of development in Europe .
   
   However, the recent EMEA guidelines also contributed to the beginning of a consolidation process of the EPO biogeneric developments because development requires a higher than expected investment, and revenues from the European market will be rather limited. The European EPO market is considered to be about 20 to 25 % of the global EPO market. On the other hand, intensive partnering discussions are ongoing as companies attempt to enrich their renal/hemodialysis or oncology franchises with an EPO product.
   
   Japan is not excempt from biogeneric developments, as the first development of a biogeneric EPO in Japan recently has been disclosed.

   Amsterdam (BETTEN BEURSMEDIA NEWS) - Crucell heeft zijn samenwerking met technologiepartner DSM Biologics versterkt. Dat heeft het Leidse biotechnologiebedrijf donderdag bekendgemaakt. De twee breiden hun bestaande commerciele PER.C6-samenwerking uit.
   
   Crucell heeft hiervoor een onbekend bedrag ontvangen van DSM, in ruil voor extra licentierechten en een hogere aandeel in toekomstige licentie-inkomsten.
   
   PER.C6 moet een soort standaard worden in de mondiale biotechnologiesector. De PER.C6-technologie, een cellijn, moet het favoriete productieplatform voor andere farmaceutische en biotechnologiebedrijven worden.
   
   PER.C6 is gebaseerd op een menselijke cellijn. De technologie is ontwikkeld voor het produceren van vaccins, antistoffen en andere biotechnologische producten die effectiever zijn en mogelijk minder bijwerkingen hebben dan producten die niet zijn ontwikkeld op basis van menselijk materiaal.
   
   Met PER.C6 kunnen grote hoeveelheden materiaal in bulk worden vervaardigd, waardoor de doorlooptijd van het productieproces korter kan worden en de kosten lager.
   
   DSM en Crucell werken onder meer aan een geintegreerde oplossing voor de productie van recombinante eiwitten en monoklonale antistoffen op basis van de PER.C6-technologie van Crucell, om op die manier meer inkomsten te genereren uit licenties en royalties.

   Ik weet niet of ik zo blij ben met het gegeven dat DSM nu meer licentie-inkomsten heeft. Voor de korte termijn is het gunstig omdat crucell waarschijnlijk een flink bedrag ontvangt, maar voor de langere termijn betekent het mogelijk wel minder royalties voor crucell (en dus een lagere winst). Laat ik er maar vanuit gaan dat het management dit natuurlijk ook ziet en met alle kennis die het heeft een verstandige beslissing heeft genomen.

    Hier staat een joekel van een FOUT in!
    Niet Crucell krijgt een groter aandeel in de toekomstige licenties,
    maar DSM ontvangt in de toekomst een groter gedeelte van de royaltie inkomsten.

    Dat is helemaal niet zo zeker.
    Ik kan me een heel leuk scenario indenken waarbij het weldegelijk klopt.
    
    DSM neemt gewoon meer licenties en daarvan krijgt Crucell een hoger percentage.

    Niet Crucell krijgt hoger licentie inkomsten, maar DSM!
    Lees het oorspronkelijke persbericht nog eens goed...
    Tja, dan moet Crucell dus toch maar weer PBs in het Nederlands uitbrengen, want dit kunnen onze jongens bij het ANP niet aan. Ha.

    De engelse versie (het persbericht) is zeker zo gesteld dat DSM meer uit licentie krijgt, terwijl in de Nederlandse persuiting dat Crucell is.

    Ik schat in dat DSM een bedrag van tussen de 50 en 100 miljoen euro aan Crucell betaalt.
    En dat DSM daarnaast extra zal investeren in mensen en middelen, om PER.C6 verder uit te bouwen tot wereldstandaard.
    DSM heeft duidelijk geropen dat dit een klapper wordt.
    Zal me niet verbazen als DSM een belang in Crucell aan het opbouwen is (tot ca. 5% van het uitstaande aandelenkapitaal).
    
    Mensen, dit is fantastisch nieuws voor PER.C6 en Crucell. Crucell zal met het geld ongetwijfeld een bedoeling hebben! Wat ..... dat zullen we binnen enkele maanden weten.

    Wat doet zo'n bericht nu met de aim to be CBE-doelstelling? Op 13 februari gaan ze die echt niet meer herhalen. Of gaat Brus nog wat masceren met zijn nieuwe topline growth-doelstelling (zonder uitspraken te doen over winst etc.)
    
    Ik kan me ook niet aan de indruk onttrekken dat DSM wil gaan produceren. Vanaf wanneer? Welke producten? Welke markten?
    De bigbang komt IMHO steeds dichterbij. Deze kunnen we toevoegen aan het DDS van Louis!
    
    Laat Wijma hier maar eens wat kritische vragen over stellen. Dan krijgt de goe-gemeente wellicht door wat hier gaande is.
