In a wide-ranging interview with talk show host Charlie Rose, Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook besides talking about his appointment as CEO, company’s rivals and partners, and Beats’ acquisition, also shed lights on the one service where the company failed miserably. Yes, we are referring to Maps, which the company released with iOS 6 in 2012. Maps was not fully polished, and on several occasions not even accurate. Tim Cook admits that the company “screwed up” on Maps.
“Oh, we screwed up,” Cook said. “There are many screw ups in that one. There’s just not one. We did screw up on the release. It should not have happened like it did. It shouldn’t have come out.”
Maps was Apple’s replacement for Google Maps, which Apple pulled shortly before iOS 6's release. But Maps was terribly received by users. It was inaccurate, had labelled several places wrong, and lacked transit directions.
In fact, shortly after Maps release, Tim Cook issued a public apology, and advised users to use third-party alternatives of Maps, which included HERE and Google Maps’ Web versions.
But the service has become better since. Cook assures that the company is still very keen on having a mapping service of its own. “We’ve learned, and corrected, and continue to invest on Maps.”
