    Microsoft onthult Origami

    AMSTERDAM - Softwarereus Microsoft heeft z'n reeds veelbesproken Origami onthuld. Het gaat om een kruising tussen een laptop en een handheld ter grootte van een paperback boek. Microsoft hoopt met de technologie een geheel nieuwe markt aan te boren.

    Microsoft toonde een Origami-apparaat van nog geen kilo, uitgevoerd met een harde schijf en een aanraakscherm van 7-inch. De nieuwe, 'ultra draagbare' pc draait verder op chips van Intel en gebruikt een gemodificeerde versie van Microsofts Windows XP Tablet PC Edition als besturingssysteem.

    Samsung, Asustek en de Chinese pc-bouwer Founder Group komen als eerste met op Microsofts Origami technologie gebaseerde apparaten. Het getoonde product van Samsung komt waarschijnlijk in april op de markt. De prijs komt volgens Microsoft tussen de 599 en 999 dollar te liggen.

    Microsoft kondigde al geruime tijd geleden aan met een nieuw product op de markt te komen. Het bedrijf maakte in een mysterieuze online campange al duidelijk dat het apparaat of de technologie Origami zou heten. Veel kenners verwachtten een nieuw type handheld dat de concurrentie zou aangaan met de iPod en Sony's PSP.

    De inspanningen van Microsoft om de markt warm te krijgen voor alternatieve pc's zijn tot nu toe overigens niet erg succesvol. De door Microsoft-baas Bill Gates zo geliefde Tablet PC is bepaald nog geen verkoopsucces.

    Een van de problemen van de Origami-computer is de batterijduur, zo gaf Microsoft toe. De huidige variant gaat zo'n drie uur mee. Het is de bedoeling dat de accu in de toekomst een dag meegaat.

    Hmmmm, koersrange voorbeurs: 1.62-1.67
    Ik denk dat ze wel enigszins last krijgen van het feit, dat TMTA niet in de Origami zit.
    Ook omdat op Yahoo van de daken geschreeuw wordt, dat TMTA dan in een ander Microschoft product zal komen (overpump).

    Ik denk dat we de komende dagen terug gaan zakken naar 1,40
    Ik ga vekopen morgen. En weer kopen wanneer de koers begint op te lopen.

    NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) is working with Santa Clara, Calif.-based Transmeta Corp. (TMTA) on another mysterious hardware project, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported on its Web site Monday.

    The newspaper said Transmeta, which specializes in microprocessors for hand-held computers and other machines, disclosed in a regulatory filing last week that it had "substantially completed" the work required under a series of "development services agreements" it signed with Microsoft last year.

    Microsoft said the work isn't related to the tiny "Ultra Mobile PCs" unveiled earlier this month as part of its previously secret Origami Project, the Post-Intelligencer said, but neither company will say what Transmeta has been doing for Microsoft.

    The filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission describe the initiative only as a "proprietary Microsoft project," and about 30 Transmeta engineers have been assigned to the effort, the newspaper said.

    It said some analysts speculate that the deal could reflect Microsoft's desire to see hardware makers release new types of machines to generate extra consumer interest later this year, when it launches Windows Vista, the next version of its flagship operating system.

    In a conference call last month, Transmeta Chief Executive Art Swift told analysts that he wasn't able to disclose many details of the Microsoft deal because of a non-disclosure agreement, the Post-Intelligencer said. But he acknowledged that the work involves a variation on the company's Efficeon processor, a power-efficient chip that uses the common x86 architecture on which programs from Microsoft and many others run.

    The newspaper noted that Microsoft often shows new hardware prototypes at its annual Windows Hardware Engineering Conference. The next one begins May 23 in Seattle.
