Solar Frontier Eyes Lower Panel Costs With Production Overhaul

Solar Frontier KK, a unit of Showa Shell Sekiyu K.K. says the switch to a more efficient production process will help cut costs at a new factory intended to serve as a model plant for overseas expansion.

The company aims to shave more than a fifth off its production costs for thin-film solar panels within two years at the plant in Miyagi prefecture, President Mr Atsuhiko Hirano said in an interview.

Mr Hirano said that the Tokyo-based company expects to cut manufacturing cost to 40 cents per watt from about 50 cents at the moment, Hirano said. Excluding depreciation, costs could fall to as low as 30 cents.

He said that “To reach that level would allow us to stay competitive, even though there is further reduction in average selling prices in the market.”

Large Chinese panel makers reached in-house production costs of 42 cents per watt to 49 cents per watt in the first quarter this year, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Average selling prices for those companies were 58 cents per watt to 60 cents per watt.

The Miyagi plant has production capacity of 150 MW a year, the minimum size necessary for efficient production, according to Hirano. That compares with Solar Frontier’s main factory in Miyazaki prefecture in southwestern Japan that can produce nearly 1,000 MW annually. The company is planning to build production capacity of 1,000 MW outside Japan.

He added that the new plant’s compact production line will reduce capital expenditure, while a change in module structure will push down material costs. Further reduction is also expected by cutting the manufacturing process to 8 hours from 24 hours.

Japan’s solar market is expanding rapidly after the government introduced an incentive program for renewables in July 2012. The Japanese solar market shifted focus to utility-scale projects while installations before the incentives were mostly residential.

Mr Hirano said that the domestic residential solar can still be highly sustainable as the market is getting close to achieve grid parity, where residential solar is equal in cost to power from a utility, amid falling prices of systems.

He concluded that “Given that grid parity is just around the corner, the residential solar market can still expand,” he said. “Our company is closer than anyone to grid parity and we can use our position to tap into demand.”

Virginia SCC deals setback to 20 MW remington project

The Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) has declined to approve a Dominion (NYSE:D) subsidiary request to develop a 20 MW solar project in Northern Virginia, saying the company must first explore third-party alternatives via a solar request for proposals (RFP).

Dominion has proposed developing the Remington solar project near the town of Remington in Fauquier County. Dominion announced in January that a regulated subsidiary planned to build the project on a site that the company owns near the existing Remington natural gas power plant.

Dominion had hoped to bring the Remington solar project online in 2016. The company had said it expected the project to cost in the neighborhood of USD 47m.

But the SCC said in an Oct. 20 news release that Virginia law requires Dominion Virginia Power (also known as Virginia Electric and Power) to demonstrate it has considered alternative options, including third-party market alternatives, during its process for selecting the Remington Solar Facility.

The SCC said that the SCC must also consider the extent to which such a proposed facility is likely to result in unreasonable increases in rates paid by consumers.

In its final order, the SCC said that “As a ‘small renewable’ solar project, the Remington Solar Facility is one type of generation resource that the General Assembly has identified as in the public interest.”

The SCC went on to say, “The General Assembly, however, has not declared it to be in the public interest that renewable power can only be obtained from the applicant’s own self-build project, or at any price, no matter how burdensome to consumers.”

The Commission cited testimony from the Solar Association, the Mid-Atlantic Renewable Energy Coalition, and the Virginia Sierra Club that a ‘request-for-proposal’ process could have provided evidence as to whether lower-cost alternatives exist to provide this renewable power. The Commission also noted that the Attorney General’s Division of Consumer Counsel asserted that the company had failed to satisfy the statutory requirements necessary for SCC approval.

According to the record established for this case, the estimated cost of the proposed facility would be USD 2,350 per kW. Its average annual operating capacity factor would be 22 percent.

According to the SCC order in the case, by comparison, the estimated cost of Dominion's combined-cycle gas generating station under construction in Brunswick County is USD 934/kW, with a much higher expected capacity factor.

India likely to propose special session on solar energy in Paris

PTI reported that India is likely to propose a special session on solar energy and issues related to technology transfer to developing nations during the UN climate change summit in Paris later this year.

This was conveyed by Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi to Mozambique President Mr Filipe Nyusi during his bilateral meeting ahead of the 3rd India Africa Forum Summit here.

Tanmaya Lal, Joint Secretary [E and SA] in the Ministry of External Affairs "Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi also mentioned that during the upcoming Conference of Parties (CoP21) in Paris, in the context of power requirement. India would be proposing a special gathering to discuss solar energy and issues related to technology transfer in that sector."

India in its recently-announced climate action plans or Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC) has pledged to achieve about 40 percent cumulative electric power installed capacity from "non-fossil fuel" based energy resources by 2030 in which a major chunk would be solar energy.

India has already put forward an ambitious solar energy expansion programme which seeks to enhance the capacity to 100GW by 2022 and is also expected to be scaled up further thereafter.

India has maintained that green technology needs of emerging economies like itself are "crucial" to fight greenhouse gas emissions and has sought financial as well as technological support from developed nations.

The CoP21 or the Paris Climate change conference is going to take place from November 30 to December 11 and Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi will visit Paris on November 30 to take part in its inaugural session.

However, the summit will, for the first time in over 20 years of UN negotiations, aim to achieve a legally-binding and universal agreement on climate to keep global warming below 2°C.

Final report on new solar power policy ready - Official

PTI reported that Delhi government is likely to approve new solar power policy next month which will allow residents to install solar panels on rooftops of their households to meet shortage of electricity in the national capital.

It said that the policy will also allow installation of solar panels on the rooftops of government buildings and bus stands of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) to generate power.

A senior government official said that power department has prepared a final report of solar power policy which is expected to be tabled in the Cabinet in November.

The official said the new policy aims to generate 1,000 MW solar power for the national capital till 2020.

In September, Delhi Dialogue Commission, an advisory body of the AAP government, had presented a draft policy recommending generation of 1,000 MW solar power capacity for the national capital by 2020.

The draft policy recommends installation of 1 Giga Watt (1 GW = 1,000 Mega Watts) solar power capacity in Delhi by the year 2020. It is proposed to double it to 2 GW by 2025, which is 21 per cent of national capital's peak power demand.

Mr Ashish Khetan, DDC vice chairman, said that "In seven years, a family will recover the investment made for solar installation. Average age of solar plant is 25 years so a family can enjoy free electricity for 17-18 years. Payback time for commercial, industrial and government is only 5.5 years and it will save INR 15,000 each year."

    Opheffen salderen is nadelig

Scatec plans USD 600m spend in Egypt solar space in next 2 yrs

It is reported that Norway’s Scatec Solar (SSO) plans to invest more than USD 600 million in Egypt’s solar energy programme over the next 2 years.

SSO statement said that the company has already initiated engineering and procurement activities in Benban and Zaafarana, the two solar sites in Egypt.

The statement said that “Topography and geotechnical studies have already been completed, work begun on the environmental and social impact assessment, and weather stations are being installed at the two sites to measure solar irradiation, heat, and soiling losses.”

Under Egypt’s new feed-in tariff (FiT) solar energy programme, SSO has secured participation in five projects totalling 250 MW. SSO will be the lead developer in one project, while in four others, it has secured agreements with other developers to participate as equity investor, EPC and O&M provider.

To tackle the nation’s acute power deficit, Egypt has invited proposals from foreign solar energy developers to construct 2.3 GW utility-scale solar plants during 2015-2017.

By 2022, the Government plans to supply 20 percent of installed capacity from renewable energy. Over the next seven years, the foreign investments required to build 6 GW of solar will be in the range of USD 9-10 billion.

As solar plants run on free and abundant sun energy, huge benefits many times this investment will be gained by avoiding the cost of importing expensive fossil fuel to run power stations as well as saving precious foreign exchange. In addition, solar energy plants are rapidly constructed, safe, noiseless, non-polluting and clean, involving zero carbon emissions.

Mr Raymond Carlsen CEO of SSO said that the company will provide training and teach skills to the citizens during the construction of solar plants. Once the Egyptian government issues agreements and permits, the company will work immediately to quickly deliver electricity.

Opbrengst in april 343 kWh. (Dit was een extreem zonnige maand)
Opbrengst in mei 381 kWh.
Opbrengst in juni 2015 389 kWh.

Totaal vanaf start nu 2,173 kWh (in totaal 223 dagen)

Uitgerekend jaarrendement 2,200 kWh.

    Voda (uw energie guru) :-)

PDO and GPS breaks ground on landmark solar project in Oman

It is reported that Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and GlassPoint Solar have broken ground on their landmark solar project ‘Miraah’ in Oman.

A statement said that the site preparation and grading for the project, located at the Amal oilfield in southern Oman, began one month ahead of schedule.

Miraah, which means mirror in Arabic, will harness the Sun’s energy to produce steam used in heavy oil production. In July, the two companies announced a deal to build one of the world’s largest solar plants which at its peak will be able to generate in excess of one gigawatt of solar thermal energy.

Mr Raoul Restucci, managing director of PDO, said that “The ground-breaking is a significant milestone for PDO and GlassPoint as we progress towards the safe and efficient delivery of Miraah. I commend the project team and our local contractors for their tireless efforts to not only stay on track, but pushing forward ahead of schedule.”

Mr Restucci said that “PDO is proud to lead the industry in deploying innovative solutions that allow us to develop our heavy oil while at the same time reduce our energy consumption and our costs. Miraah will provide a substantial amount of the steam demand at Amal, reducing our reliance on natural gas to make steam. The gas saved can be used by other industries to support Oman’s diversification and economic growth strategies.”

The statement said that the site grading is being performed by a Local Community Contractor (LCC) owned and operated by Omanis that live in the communities surrounding the Amal field. Developing a local Omani workforce and job opportunities for local contractors and small business is part of PDO’s and GlassPoint’s joint commitment to In-country Value.

Mr Rod MacGregor, president and CEO of GlassPoint, said that “Miraah will be 100 times larger than our solar pilot at Amal, which has been operating successfully for nearly three years now. The pilot was built safely, on time and on budget, providing invaluable experience to ensure we achieve this same success with Miraah at commercial-scale.”

US SunEdison to supply cheapest solar power in India

Reuters reported that US-based SunEdison has won a bid to sell solar power in India at a record low tariff, which could boost the appeal of the renewable source at a time when Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi is pushing for clean energy to combat climate change.

Solar energy still has a long way to go before it can effectively compete with coal, given questions over consistent supply and transmission. But falling rates could unlock more government support for solar and wind energy.

Mr Modi's government expects clean energy to yield business worth $160 billion in India in the next five years, and established U.S. companies like SunEdison and First Solar Inc are likely to be the biggest beneficiaries.

Mr Upendra Tripathy, new and renewable energy secretary, said that SunEdison won the auction for a 500 megawatt project in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, bidding to supply power at 4.63 rupees ($0.0706) per kilowatt-hour.

Maryland Heights, Missouri-based SunEdison did not immediately reply to requests for comment.

"Delighted that an all time low solar tariff has been achieved during reverse e-auction conducted by NTPC," tweeted power, coal and renewable energy minister Mr Piyush Goyal, referring to India's biggest power utility.

CIL to invest INR 6,000 crore to set up solar power units

According to a senior company executive, state-run Coal India (CIL) will invest INR 6,000 crore to set up 1,000 MW of solar power generation capacity over the next five to six years.

The executive, who did not wish to be named adding that land for the plants will be provided by the states, said that "We will fund 70% of the project cost through debt, which will come mostly from banks, while the rest will be through internal resources."

As a first step, Coal India has prepared a detailed project report for setting up 200 MW of solar generation capacity.

The coal producer is also looking at setting up floating solar panels on water bodies that are formed when a mine is closed down.

Another company executive said that "We have firmed up the technology for setting up floating solar panels on the shallow sides of these lakes, while the technology for setting up such panels on deep water is being worked out. 1 MW of solar capacities on such water bodies will cost around INR 4-5 crore and will require close to five acres of water surface.”

Coal India has numerous water bodies under its command areas and we intend to use them for setting up floating solar panels," he said. This will be the first time in several years that Coal India will be raising debt from the market. The World Bank had sanctioned a S1-billion loan for Coal India in the 1990s which has long been paid back.

Su-Kam installs 40KWp rooftop solar power plant in Delhi

Economic Times reported that power backup solutions provider Su-Kam Power Systems has installed a 40KWp rooftop solar power plant for Allied Engineering Works in Delhi.

The solar plant has been installed under rate contract with Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL). The grid-connected plant will produce 56,000 units of electricity, helping the company save INR 5 lakh in energy cost every year.

Su-Kam had the overall responsibility of designing, supplying, testing and commissioning of the power plant. The company was shortlisted as empanelled vendor for TPDDL's consumers for installation of solar projects through competitive bidding.

To promote use of renewable energy for self-consumption, TPDDL will help Su-Kam install net-metering systems.

The solar system consists of two string inverters of 20 KW each and 160 solar PV panels of 250 watt each.
