TSK and Enviromena chosen for 120MW Jordan PV power build

It is reported that Spanish engineering firm TSK and Abu Dhabi-based Enviromena have been selected to build what is expected to be Jordan’s largest PV power plant.

The 120MWp system will be located in the area of Quweira towards the south of Jordan, between its two World Heritage sites, Petra and Wadi Rum.

Construction of the project is due to begin in early 2016 and is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2017.

The estimated cost of the system is USD 128 million, with funding coming from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development.

TSK, which will be the lead engineering contractor in the joint venture, said the project incorporated two mounting technologies to maximise yield – an equal proportion of fixed stand and single-axis trackers.

According to TSK, upon operation, the plant is expected to generate up to 225GWh of power annually.

Solar venture with Adani will take a while - SunEdison CEO

Business Line reported that US based SunEdison’s MoU with Adani Enterprises to build a $4-billion plant to manufacture solar power equipment in India will take more time to materialise.

Mr Ahmad Chatila, Global President and Chief Executive Officer of SunEdison, said that “These deals take a long time to manifest themselves. It took us two years to negotiate our (manufacturing) deal with Samsung in South Korea. This is because such projects are capital intensive and extremely expensive committal plans.”

SunEdison and Adani Enterprises signed an MoU in January to construct a USD 4-billion facility to “vertically integrate all aspects of solar panel production on site, including polysilicon refining, ingots, wafers, cells and panels production”.

Qatar Petroleum, Qatar Electricity plan solar power venture - QEWC

State-owned oil and gas producer Qatar Petroleum and utility Qatar Electricity and Water Co (QEWC) said that they had agreed to establish a venture to generate electricity from solar power.

A memorandum of understanding signed on Wednesday provides for Qatar Petroleum to own 40 per cent of the venture and QEWC the remainder. They did not give details of their solar generation plans.

The company said that electricity production by QEWC and its subsidiaries is expected to rise to about 11,000 megawatts in the first half of 2018 from around 8,600 MW currently.

Commercial generation of solar power is rare in the Gulf but oil exporting countries around the region are starting to develop it, citing environmental reasons as well as a desire to conserve oil and gas reserves for export in the future.

Solar dome to create awareness about solar energy in India

In a bid to raise awareness about the importance of solar energy, a solar dome, first of its kind in the country, is set to come up on the outskirts of Kolkata.

Mr Manish Gupta, West Bengal Power Minister, said that the solar dome will not only serve to raise awareness about solar energy, it will also act as a museum displaying various usages of the unconventional energy as well as a tourist spot.

The entire dome will be covered by solar panels which, in turn, will produce electricity to run the project and will also provide power to the nearby Eco-Park at Rajarhat. It will house a planetarium, marine aquarium, gallery and a view point from which the visitors will have a panoramic view of Rajarhat-Newtown.

However, the project will be implemented by the state-owned West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) in coordination with West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corportion.

According to Gupta, the project will cost around INR 30 crore and will be completed by the end of next year.

Mr Narayan Swaroop Nigam Chairman of WBSEDCL said that "The outer part of the dome will be covered with solar module or panels. It will produce solar energy. It will meet not only its own needs, but also those of people living in the surrounding areas."

Mr Nigam said that "The first phase will be completed by next year and the next two phases will be completed after that. We are hopeful that it will be a huge attraction for the people living in and around Kolkata."

According to officials of WBSEDCL, the solar dome project is an awarness project which is part of the state government's ambitious target to generate at least 100 MWs of power from rooftop solar units over the next two to three years.

An official said that "The state government has set a target to generate at least 100 MWs of power from rooftop solar panels in the next 2-3 years."

Six farmers in Gujarat village join to trap sun and power the grid - Report

Indian Express reported that Mr Pravin Parmar, 29, has always used a diesel pump to irrigate his five-bigha patch of land in Dhundi village in Kheda district, Gujarat. The INR 750 he would pay for using 15 litres of diesel a day to irrigate his farm ensured that he never earned much — just about INR 10,000 a month — from his crop of tomato and brinjal.

However, next year, as early as January or February, Mr Parmar is hopeful of supplementing his monthly income by at least Rs 3,000-Rs 4,500, not through agriculture but through power generation.

Azure Power bags 100 MW solar project from NTPC

Azure Power announced that it has won 100 MW solar power capacity projects in Andhra Pradesh, which were recently put up for auction by NTPC Limited under the National Solar Mission.

The projects will be built in the Andhra Pradesh solar park, where NTPC has auctioned a total capacity of 1000 MW of solar power projects. Although ten companies participated in the online reverse auction process, Azure Power secured 100 MW of the total 150 MW capacity auctioned. The tariff for the project is pegged at Rs 5.12/ kWh, 11 per cent higher than the first two auctions priced in the same solar park.

The first two auctions in the Andhra Pradesh solar park were won by Sun Edison and Soft Bank at a tariff of Rs 4.63/ kWh. This auction of 150 MW capacity was set for projects using solar cells and modules manufactured in India to promote the government of India's Make in India campaign.

Mr Inderpreet Wadhwa, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Azure Power in a statement said, “With this win, we have once again demonstrated our strong project development capabilities. We are proud to have successfully brought down the cost of solar power in this project.”

Mr Panda says ACME Solar in wait-and-watch mode

Business Line reported that solar power developer ACME is adopting a ‘wait and watch’ approach in the midst of aggressive bids for solar power projects that have seen winning tariff bids as low as INR 4.63 a unit.

Mr Prashant Panda, President-Business Development at ACME Solar Holding, said that “In reverse bidding, things are very competitive the world over. There is no way you can get to INR 4.63 a unit levels without cutting your IRR (internal rate of return) expectations. These bids are from those who want to enter the market, which we do not need to do. We already have a portfolio of 1,200 MW so we now have a ‘wait and watch’ approach,”

Mr Panda said in the current cost structure, for projects to be delivered by end-2016, tariffs of below ?5 a unit will be sustainable for ACME at a “fair IRR”.

He said that “We might get adventurous once in a while, otherwise my personal belief is that we should wait and watch for a few more months.”

In the past two months, the US-based SunEdison as well as Japan’s Softbank and Bharti Enterprises joint venture SBG Cleantech won one solar power project each by bidding at INR 4.63 a unit. For SBG Cleantech, this was the first project it had won.

ACME, which has received investment from French renewable energy major EDF Energies Nouvelles and natural resources saving group EREN, Luxemburg, will get close to INR 6 a unit on an average across its portfolio of 1,200 MW.

China to cut on-grid tariffs for solar, wind power - State planning commission

Reuters reported that China will cut payments to wind and solar electricity generators for contributing power to the grid, the country's state planning commission said over the weekend, reflecting recent declines in operating costs.

The National Development and Reform Commission in a statement said that starting in 2016, on-grid tariffs for solar producers will be CNY 0.02 to CNY 0.10 lower per kilowatt-hour — with the higher cuts applying in the country's less populated, arid western region — while tariffs for wind power generators will fall CNY 0.02 to CNY 0.03.

The cuts, which were expected, are in line with a CNY 0.03 cut on Wednesday to on-grid tariffs for thermal power. Coal still fires more than 70% of China's power generation.

"This is positive for rooftop solar," said Rosie Pidcock, senior business development manager at UGE International, a New York-headquartered rooftop solar developer operating in China, noting the biggest impact would fall on utility-scale developers, who have mainly built solar farms in the country's west.

The cost of installing panels was still set to fall in 2016, Pidcock said, and the cuts were not enough to push companies into the red. China is trying to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels that are contributing to choking smog. The city of Beijing declared two pollution "red alerts" this fall.

Morocco postpones opening of world's largest solar power project in Ouarzazate

The Guardian reported that Morocco has postponed without explanation the inauguration of Noor-1, a solar power plant due to open Sunday in Ouarzazate, part of what will eventually be the world’s largest solar power production facility.

When asked by AFP, the communications agency that organised the inauguration on behalf of Moroccan solar energy agency Masen gave no reasons for the last-minute delay.

With an electricity production capacity of 160 megawatts, Noor-1 is supposed to allow Morocco to significantly reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

According to estimates from the energy ministry, the complex should allow Morocco to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 240,000 tons per year.

The project’s next phases – Noor 2 and Noor 3 – are to follow in 2016 and 2017, and a call for tenders is open for Noor 4.

However, Morocco has scarce oil and gas reserves, and is the biggest importer of energy in the Middle East and North Africa.

    Hi Voda!
Jij post hier zeer interessante artikels over zonneenergie.

Such is live.

Ben jij in Solar geinvesteerd.

Opbrengst in april 343 kWh. (Dit was een extreem zonnige maand)
Opbrengst in mei 381 kWh.
Opbrengst in juni 2015 389 kWh.
    Opbrengst 40 kWh.
Totaal vanaf start nu 2,272 kWh (in totaal 284 dagen)

Uitgerekend jaarrendement 2,200 kWh.

SolarTown offers rooftop solar system on lease basis in Hyderabad

Business Line reported that SolarTown Energy Solutions has installed a solar rooftop system on a 2,400 square foot multi-level residential property located in Filmnagar, Hyderabad under a residential lease programme.

It is estimated to save the homeowner about INR 4 lakh over the 20-year-lease period. The residential lease programme, comes with zero up-front costs and fixed monthly rates lower than discoms, shielding homeowners against increasing electricity prices, with a 17 per cent savings starting on Day 1.

The 6 kW rooftop system offsets a major portion of the customer’s energy consumption. Under this solar lease programme, the homeowner will pay a fixed monthly lease to SolarTown for the 20-year term. The solar rooftop system consists of 24 solar modules and one 6 kW inverter, capable of powering all loads in the house including air conditioning and water pumps.

Homeowner Vinoth Poddar said in a statement that “SolarTown’s lease option was the obvious answer for having my own system installed, especially without any out-of-pocket costs. The biggest benefit is that my electricity monthly payments are fixed at a significantly lower rate than the Discom. For the next 20 years I do not have to worry about my power bills.”

Mr Vikram Dileepan, CEO and co-founder of SolarTown, said that “Until now, residential solar was believed to be economical only when coupled with subsidies. With this lease model, we are making solar an affordable and practical option for residential customers across India.”

Increase in Scottish solar power capacity

The Courier reported that solar power systems rose by 28% in Scotland last year, but the Scottish Government has been challenged to make prospects for sun energy even brighter.

WWF Scotland and the Solar Trade Association Scotland have revealed that the total installed capacity of solar photo-voltaic (PV) systems north of the Border has now reached 179 megawatts (MW).

Fife has the third biggest amount in Scotland at 13.3MW, and Perth and Kinross has 9.3MW of systems. Angus has 8.8MW and Dundee 2.5MW.

More than 40,000 homes and 850 business premises in Scotland now have solar PV arrays. The total installed solar PV capacity on homes now stands at 159MW.

The organisations said the installations would help to prevent thousands of tonnes of climate-damaging carbon dioxide from being emitted every year.

WWF Scotland director Lang Banks said that “Despite the challenges facing the industry, it’s fantastic to see so many homes and businesses embracing solar power. Although the total installed solar capacity is small when compared to wind energy, we should remember that collectively these solar panels are helping to prevent thousands of tonnes of emissions every year.”

He believed an ever greater uptake of renewable technologies will be needed after the UN climate talks in Paris.

He called on the Scottish Government to do all it can to help ensure Scotland switches on to the full potential of solar power.

John Forster of the Solar Trade Association Scotland welcomed the growth of solar power in new homes, but said “It’s critical we find a way to encourage the use of solar on existing buildings. We’d like to see the Scottish Government bring forward measures to encourage much greater uptake of solar power on the many more existing homes and buildings.”

ACME promises cheaper solar power by storing it in lithium-ion batteries

Economic Times reported that a Gurgaon-based company claims to have developed a solution that can generate solar power, store it batteries and supply to consumers in an entire city at rates that are 10%-15% cheaper than what they pay for electricity. If achieved, this could turn out to be a major breakthrough in power storage and also help reduce greenhouse emissions, though some experts express doubts over the claim and want the company to first demonstrate the technology.

Power storage systems - essentially batteries - on megawatt level are extremely costly. Generation of solar power is erratic as it depends on the sun and even a patch of cloud can cut down generation. There are no cost-effective solutions to store this power that can be delivered to customers at commercially competitive rates 24x7.

The Gurgaon company's solution assumes significance also since world leaders have just agreed to cut down on greenhouse emissions considerably at the recently concluded Paris climate talks. This meant bringing down thermal power generation and increasing solar power installations.

Mr Manoj Kumar Upadhyay, founder of ACME Cleantech Solutions, says his company is ready to sell power to Indian homes at as low as Rs 7 per unit. Upadhyay, with over 19 years of experience in clean energy, is a former technical head at Telecom Power Company, Benning Gmbh.

A senior analyst from a large consultancy firm said: "Battery costs have not declined so much to produce power at discounts of 10-15% of discom tariffs. However, if this company has developed a technology that can store and supply solar power at such discounts, it is definitely a major breakthrough that can change equations of solar vis-avis thermal power.

According to Samir Sharan, chief executive of the ACME group, the system involves installing lithium-ion batteries - the ones used in cell phones - on a much larger scale and setting up solar power plants that will store the power generated from the solar plant in these batteries. During day time, power would be supplied to homes as well as used for charging the batteries, while at night, these batteries would provide power to homes. These batteries can store large volume of power, enough to power cities. The business model involves operating on a build-own-and-operate model, under which the company will set up its own storage and generation systems. It would sell power at a predefined price.

Mr Shran said that "Cost of lithium-ion batteries has been on the decline in the last few years. With global lithium-ion battery manufacturers declaring large expansion plans, the cost of these batteries are expected to decline further in the next few years as demand for such batteries. The prices at which we would sell power would depend on the cost of setting up solar plants at these states and it is a scalable model. We can set up more batteries if need be and match it up with larger solar power generation capacity as and when demand rises."

SP Gon Choudhury, former secretary for renewable energy in West Bengal, said: "They need to demonstrate their claims through a project either in India or abroad. At this stage we are not convinced, but if they can demonstrate it, it is indeed a major development because battery costs have not reduced so much to support such low power prices."

Appalachian Power looks to bring solar, wind into energy mix

AP reported that Appalachian Power is looking to diversify its energy profile by moving toward a greater reliance on solar and wind energy.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports (bit.ly/1K7qTqE) that the company will continue to rely on coal-fired power plants to supply most of the energy for its West Virginia customers. But the Appalachian Power said in documents recently filed with the state’s Public Service Commission that it also plans to increase its renewable energy capacity by more than 9 percent by 2025.

First Energy subsidiaries, Mon Power and Potomac Edison, said that they’ll continue to provide their nearly 400,000 customers with electricity primarily from coal-fired power plants. First Energy’s resource plan show that the company is also considering purchasing another existing coal-fired power plant to meet its capacity shortfall.

Rooftop solar projects to get USD 1.5 billion foreign aid

Economic Times reported that the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and the New Development Bank formed by the BRICS nations are providing loans to boost India's rooftop solar programme.

Mr Upendra Tripathy, secretary at the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), said that "We are getting USD 500 million from each of them to fund rooftop solar projects, mostly in the industrial and commercial sector."

However, the loans are likely to be disbursed through leading public sector banks and financial institutions.

Last week, the Cabinet Committee for Economic Affairs approved hiking MNRE budget for setting up grid-connected rooftop solar systems to INR 5,000 crore from INR 600 crore.

However, the funds will be used to provide 30% subsidy to all domestic users and public institutions which set up rooftop solar plants.

Industrial and commercial establishments, however, are not entitled to this subsidy.

Mr Tripathy said htat "These loans will bring in cheaper capital even for those not covered by the subsidy."

However, India has set itself an ambitious target of 1,00,000 MW of installed solar capacity by 2022, of which 40,000 MW is to come from rooftop solar plants.

Currently, rooftop solar contributes merely 525 MW to India's total 4,800 MW solar capacity. While the tar get for rooftop solar in 201516 was a modest 200 MW, for 2016-17 it is 4,800 MW, or equal to India's entire solar capacity at present.
