    NEW YORK, Sept 16 (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve Bank of New York took the unusual step of providing some $87 billion in financing to units of bankrupt Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc (LEH.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) to prevent disruption in trading markets as customers flee, according to a filing on Tuesday.

    JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) advanced $87 billion to Lehman on Monday to help clear and facilitate securities transactions with customers and clients of Lehman "to avoid disruption of financial markets," according to documents filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

    The New York Fed then repaid the advance, according to filings. A Fed representative declined to comment.

    Lehman's holding company filed for bankruptcy on Monday, and although its broker-dealer units are not covered under the bankruptcy filing, customers typically unwind trades with a dealer whose holding company is bankrupt.

    On Tuesday, at the request of Lehman and the New York Fed, JPMorgan advanced $51 billion to Lehman as part of a so-called second day advance. Court documents did not specify whether the New York Fed will repay the second amount.

    AP source says Barclays to buy all or part of Lehman's investment bank, trading ops

    NEW YORK (AP) -- A person briefed on talks between Barclays PLC and Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. says the British bank has agreed to buy at least some investment banking and trading operations of the securities firm.
    An announcement of the deal to buy all or part of those businesses will be announced as early as Tuesday afternoon, the person said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because a final agreement had yet to be reached.

    The person confirmed media reports that Barclays President Robert Diamond has addressed Lehman investment bankers to inform them of his company's intentions.

    Lehman filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Monday. Barclays withdrew from weekend talks to rescue Lehman through an outright acquisition.

    Barclays to Buy Lehman Investment Bank, Save 9,000 Jobs

    A Chapter 11 filing may have saved Lehman Brothers Holdings’ investment bank.

    Barclays has reached an agreement to buy the U.S. investment banking and capital-markets businesses of Lehman and as many as 9,000 Lehman employees will find jobs with the U.K. bank, according to people familiar with the situation. The Wall Street Journal earlier reported that Barclays would pay nearly $2 billion for a large chunk of Lehman. Ultimately, even as many as 10,000 jobs could be saved, which would be a considerable proportion of Lehman’s 24,000 employees before the bankruptcy filing.

    The deal is to be put before a New York bankruptcy court judge for approval at 5 p.m. Lehman’s creditors are to meet at 6 p.m. An official announcement isn’t expected until Wednesday morning.

    The deal is expected to be structured as an asset purchase, with Barclays buying only the parts of Lehman it wants: Lehman’s trading positions and any contracts that come with the business, which is likely to include pending mergers and acquisitions, as well as stock- and debt-underwriting assignments.

    Barclays won’t be buying any of Lehman’s real estate, real-estate-backed securities, derivatives positions or over-the-counter trades. Lehman’s European business will remain in bankruptcy proceedings. Lehman also is in separate talks to sell its investment-management unit to private-equity bidders.

    In a twist, Lehman’s much-lamented Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing may have increased the chances that the capital markets business would be salvaged in a sale, according to a person close to the deal. In weekend talks, Barclays had proposed buying all of Lehman except the investment-management business and then separating out Lehman’s toxic assets along the lines of the so-called good bank/bad bank structure Lehman had been considering before the events of last week. Those talks fell apart.

    Because Lehman is in bankruptcy-law protection from creditors, however, the “bad assets” can be left at the holding company level to be liquidated according to the bankruptcy court’s instructions. Barclays was able to achieve the deal it wanted in the first place.

    Lehman and Barclays together would be the top bookrunner for global debt underwriting this year to date, according to Dealogic. It would outpace even the combination of Bank of America and Merrill Lynch, which would be No. 2 if you added their mandates.

    Haha....dat zag ik vrijdag al aankomen hoor dus nu niet mij de wijsneus gaan uithangen...ik heb toen verkocht met winst en hier geroepen dat het oppassen is omdat het zeer waarschijnlijk een pennystock zou worden en zie!
