    Bernanke laat geen ruimte voor extra stimulus

    Fed-voorzitter Ben Bernanke toonde zich dinsdag vrij somber over de Amerikaanse economie op korte termijn. De centrale bankier gaf beleggers geen sprankel hoop dat er nieuwe monetaire stimulus zit aan te komen. Bernanke sprak in Atlanta over de vooruitzichten voor de Amerikaanse economie, een toespraak waarnaar reikhalzend werd uitgekeken. En passant gaf hij de besparende beleidsmakers een veeg uit de pan.

    Bernanke verhulde niet dat de Amerikaanse economie aan het vertragen is. Dat bleek de voorbije dagen al uit een haast eindeloze stroom barre macro-economische statistieken. Signalen vanuit verschillende hoeken (consumenten- en ondernemersvertrouwen, vastgoedmarkt, arbeidsmarkt,...) wijzen erop dat de Amerikaanse economie hapert. Culminatiepunt was een dramatisch banenrapport vorige vrijdag.

    'De groei van de Amerikaanse economie dit jaar is kleiner dan verwacht', zei Bernanke. 'Een aantal signalen wijzen ook op een verlies aan momentum in de arbeidsmarkt.' Maar Bernanke gelooft wel dat de huidige vertraging van voorbijgaande aard is, net zoals de huidige inflatieopstoot. In de tweede jaarhelft verwacht hij beterschap.

    Bernanke waarschuwde de Amerikaanse beleidslui voor agressieve besparingen. 'Dergelijke kortetermijnmaatregelen kunnen het fragiele economische herstel fnuiken', aldus de Fed-voorzitter.
