    Q&A Apple’s 1Q Earnings Call

    Q: There's been a lot of publicity around Maps, can you give us an update. How does the year look in terms of iOS 7 and online services?

    Cook: We're working on some incredible stuff, the pipeline is chock full, we feel great about what we've got in store. In terms of Maps, we've made a number of improvements, and we'll roll out even more improvements across the rest of the year until it lives up to our incredibly high standards.

    In terms of other services we feel fantastic about how we are doing. We've now sent over 4 trillion notifications. With Game Center we have over 200 million registered users.

    Q: With such a large cash generation, why not step back and buy back even more stock?

    Oppenheimer: This is something we continuously assess. We are pleased to have started our share repurchase program this quarter. We returned about $4.5 billion in cash this quarter. We started the buyback program and expect to return about $45 billion over 3 years to our shareholders.

    Q: You've made comments that Apple wants to fix the TV problem. If we can take a step out of the form factor debate, can you talk high-level how important this market is to Apple.

    Cook: In terms of the product we sell today, we sold more last quarter than we've ever sold before, eclipsing 2 million during the quarter. It was up almost 60% year on year. There's very good growth in that product. What was a small niche at one time is a much larger number. I have said in the past that this is an area of intense interest for us and it remains that, and I tend to believe that there's a lot we can contribute in the space. I don't want to be more specific.

    "We've made a number of improvements to Maps," Apple CEO Tim Cook told Wall Street analysts during the company's first quarter earnings call this afternoon. Some of those include improved satellite and flyover imagery as well as local information for businesses, he said.

    Cook said that people are using Maps "significantly" more than they were before iOS 6 , which added Apple's controversial mapping software and replaced Google. Nonetheless, there's room for improvement, Cook admitted. He said "we'll keep on working on this" and added that the company planned to "roll out more improvements during the rest of the year."

    'Google wil ook smart watch maken'
    AMSTERDAM - Ook Google werkt aan een 'slim horloge'. Eerder kwamen geruchten naar buiten dat Apple aan een dergelijk apparaat zou werken.
    Volgens bronnen van Business Insider onderzoekt Google momenteel hoe zo'n 'smart watch' in de markt gezet zou kunnen worden.

    Het bedrijf heeft al een patent aangevraagd voor een dergelijk horloge. Het apparaat zou moeten gaan beschikken over navigatie en bijvoorbeeld e-mails moeten kunnen weergeven.

    De bron kan verder weinig details onthullen. In het patent dat Google aangevraagd heeft staat een horloge omschreven dat beschikt over een klep waardoor twee schermen in het apparaat verwerkt kunnen worden.

    Apple en Pebble

    Volgens eerdere geruchten werkt ook Apple aan een zogeheten smart watch. Dit horloge zou gekoppeld kunnen worden aan een iPhone en kan bestuurd worden via spraakbesturing Siri

    iOS 6.1voor ontwikkelaars vrijgegeven

    De overige verbeteringen in iOS 6.1 zijn vooral gericht op de technische werking, bijvoorbeeld verbeterde API’s en bugfixes. Apps geoptimaliseerd voor iOS 6.1 kunnen bijvoorbeeld beter zoeken in het Map Kit-framework, waarmee een ontwikkelaar Apple’s kaartendienst zelf kan gebruiken. In apps van derden kun je dan met natuurlijke taal zoeken, bijvoorbeeld ‘pizza’ of ‘koffie’ om een horecagelegenheid in de buurt te vinden.

    Apple Maps zou de afgelopen maanden ook sterk zijn verbeterd, maar dat zijn tweaks die Apple onafhankelijk van de geïnstalleerde iOS 6.x-versie kan uit voeren (de kaarten worden immers online opgehaald). Voor eindgebruikers is er eigenlijk geen reden om te staan popelen om iOS 6.1 te installeren, tenzij je je hoop hebt gevestigd op zaken als langere batterijduur (hoewel ontwikkelaars de indruk wekken dat de batterijduur niet echt verbeterd is).
    De echt grote vernieuwingen zullen we in iOS 7 zien, dat vermoedelijk tijdens WWDC in juni 2013 wordt gepresenteerd.
