    ...And gaining traction!

In addition to not having a central banker-proof currency, Ripple’s payment system is also not entirely censorship-resistant — at least not right now. Gateways are the trusted entities used to issue new US dollars, euros, Swiss francs, and other currencies on the Ripple network, and they can also freeze user funds if they notice fraudulent or suspicious activity. The Ripple network is an interesting way to make payments between two gateways (read: banks) in a more timely, low-cost manner, but the gateways in the network are the weak point when it comes to censorship-resistance.

The gateways are essentially the e-gold or Napster in the scenario. You could also say that they’re the Coinbase, Bitstamp, or Changetip of the Ripple ecosystem. Of course, the difference with bitcoin is that you know your money won’t disappear when you withdraw your bitcoins from an exchange or online wallet to a personal bitcoin address. With Ripple, an insolvent or government-attacked gateway could make your Ripple-based dollars or euros worthless overnight.

    Both systems can perhaps co-exist

For now, it seems that bitcoin and ripple will coexist over the near term. Ripple can be used to improve the traditional financial system, while bitcoin will continue its role as “gold 2.0” and a censorship-resistant payment system. I hesitate to guess which system will outlast could possibly outlast the other. Having said that, I have a more positive outlook on BTC (bitcoin) than XRP. This is due to the fact that I could see Ripple essentially becoming a platform for bitcoin payments.

EBAday attracts titans of transaction banking

More than 850 bankers and treasury professionals from across Europe are expected to descend on Amsterdam in May to hear senior executives from ING, ABN Amro, HSBC, RBS and Deutsche Bank speak at EBAday 2015, the continent's pre-eminent annual payments event.
Now in its tenth year, EBAday, put on by the Euro Banking Association and Finextra, is expected to attract a record turn out and some 45 exhibitors on 12-13 May.

The Amsterdam RAI venue, which has previously hosted Sibos, will see 17 in-depth conference sessions, covering everything from real-time payments, regulations such as the second EU payments services directive, electronic and mobile payments, and data trends and innovation.

    The speaker line-up includes:

Mark Buitenhek, Global Head Transaction Services, ING
Karin Kersten, Head of Transaction Banking, ABN AMRO
Marion King, Group Director of Payments, RBS
Marcus Treacher, Global Head of Innovation (Payments and Cash Management), HSBC
Markus Sehr, Global Head of Cash Management (Financial Institutions), Deutsche Bank
    Chris Larsen, CEO, Ripple

The conference will provide a forum to discuss the challenges and opportunities in European payments as new tech-based alternative payment service providers are licensed to challenge banks under the PSD 2 regulation. Intra-day liquidity management and, of course, Sepa 2.0 will also be up for discussion.

Ripple was not designed to replace the existing payment ecosystem but improve its foundations. For instance, the side effects of correspondent banking how international payments work today are delays, high costs, and counterparty risk. Transfers typically take 2-4 days and the process and fees are often opaque.
Ripple is an alternative to correspondent banking that enables near instant, bilateral, straight through processing. Transfers typically take 3-6 seconds and the process and fees are transparent.
And validating trans actions does not involve “proof of work” that systems such as Bitcoin do.
Regarding domestic clearing, most central banks settle periodically in
net batches via a real time gross settlement system. Ripple enables real time settlement on a gross or net basis, all day, every day.
Their technology enables point to point settlement, lowering the cost and risk of transactions.
Ripple’s current target users include banks, central banks, and other financial institutions such as payment networks. Ripple Labs, the parent company, has publicly announced three banks Fidor Bank,CBW Bank and Cross River Bank and one payment network, Earthport, one of the
    largest in the world.
Ripple Labs is also actively engaged with global regulators including the New York State Department of Financial Services, the Australian Senate, and the CSBS, among others.
The roughly 100 member team is based in San Francisco’s financial district and has received funding from Andreessen Horowitz, Google Ventures, Core Innovation Capital, Lightspeed Venture Partners, IDG
Capital Partners and others. On the web at: RippleLabs.com

(...)This is empirically untrue. If Bitcoin was “too far ahead,” then axiomatically no one would be working on all these other projects
as they would clearly see this trend a nd focus on one platform. Due to
Bitcoin’s limited usage and current niche appeal other project development continues apace. In fact, the overall field as described in this report, could be much wider as it relates to actual distributed ledgers and not just cryptocurrency systems.

Payments VP: One Thing Stands Between Bitcoin and Mass Adoption

    On the other hand:

    www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-...

LONDON and SAN FRANCISCO, 4 December 2014 – Earthport and Ripple Labs today announced a global partnership which will see the two companies use their combined expertise and technology to offer real-time cross-border bank payments. Earthport’s new offering will integrate the Ripple protocol alongside its payments network and platform, bringing a wider choice to financial institutions, in particular to optimize their liquidity management and minimize the need to pre-fund a payment account while executing cross-border transactions.

"Where [our clients] find real value is in the larger-volume, lower-value transactions," Uberoi said. About 80% to 90% of all cross-border transactions by volume make up about 10% to 15% of all cross-border transactions by value, he said.

    www.earthport.com/pr/earthport-ripple...

As CEO of Earthport Uberoi says:

Uberoi is the CEO and top individual stockholder of Earthport, a London-based company that’s built a cloud-based alternative payments network. It recorded only $11 million in sales—and zero profit—in its last fiscal year. And yet Uberoi is betting that his tiny enterprise can rewire a machine that circulates about $21 trillion annually to every corner of the globe.

Uberoi didn’t forget it, and four years later, his persistence is paying off. Bank of America, the World Bank, HSBC, Standard Chartered, Banco do Brasil, Western Union, and even SWIFT itself are among the institutions that have tapped Earthport to help them deliver their clients’ cash to more than 60 countries in 120 currencies.

Still, Earthport’s momentum could fizzle if its banking partners fail to pump serious transaction volume through its system. The firm faces a crucial test as it sets out to grow its top line—“exponentially,” Uberoi says—over the next 36 months.

The New Reality for Global Bank-to-Bank Transfers

Today’s global bank networks are built on traditional payment infrastructures that require reserves, high fees, and multiple days to settle transactions across border. An Internet protocol can enable financial institutions to securely transfer funds in any currency in real-time. Financial institutions, money transmitters and clearing houses can use this as a settlement technology to facilitate straight through processing and increase access to liquidity.

Participants in this session will: Hear early adopters explain how they are using Ripple and how it has already impacted their businesses; Take part in a series of real-time multi-currency transfers between financial institutions in different countries live on stage using physical terminals, screen projection, and audience input; Learn best practices for how to evaluate and then deploy other new payment technologies.

Western Union 'Exploring' Pilot Program With Ripple Labs

    www.coindesk.com/western-union-pilot-...

Global remittance giant Western Union is reportedly working on a pilot program with distributed payment protocol provider Ripple Labs.

The news was first revealed in a tweet by Ripple Labs promoting CEO Chris Larsen's appearance at Global Conference 2015, an annual event held by non-profit think tank the Milken Institute.

The pilot was further confirmed by Monica Long, VP of marketing and communications at Ripple Labs, who told CoinDesk that while Western Union is "exploring a pilot project using Ripple", no further details on the initiative were available.

Long did, however, suggest that Western Union was interested in Ripple due to its existing value propositions, stating:

"In general, financial institutions and networks use Ripple as a technology that powers real-time settlement in any currency to lower the cost of liquidity and compliance."

Representatives for Western Union did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

    Bears to bulls

Should such a project come to fruition, the partnership would seem to mark a transition for Western Union, which has traditionally been dismissive of the digital currency ecosystem.

First discussed in a 2013 conference, Western Union chief information officer (CIO) John "David" Thompson would later tell CoinDesk that the company didn't believe the technology was ready for today's market.

The comments came as part of an interview that sought to frame the technology as novel, but perhaps too fraught with regulatory challenges for the company's consideration.

Still, Thompson did admit to having mined bitcoin and to an interest in the technology's future implications for Western Union. "That doesn't mean that we aren’t looking at it, how we enable [usage] legally, what licenses we need in addition to what we have," he said at the time.

It remains to be seen whether the announcement marks a change from what Thompson characterized as the company's "watch and learn" approach

Chris Larsen, who heads Ripple, told the audience at the Milken Institute's Global Conference 2015 on Tuesday that it is working on a pilot with Western Union "to provide infrastructure for real-time settlement." Western Union would not comment at this time since the company is in a pre-earnings quiet period.

Both companies' moves are significant, Halford-Thompson said.
