Leveraging Distributed Ledgers to Enable Real Time X-Border Payment Networks
    8:30 - 9:20am,Monday
Palazzo Ballroom E,F,G - The Venetian Level 5

    Session Description

As new solutions emerge in the market to clear and settle cross-border payments for consumers and corporations in real-time, market adoption is heavily influenced by the breath and size of the network – the number of banks, corridors and currency pairs available to send and receive payments. What does it take to build and operate a real-time global payment network? Should there be one or multiple networks? Will networks be open to all participants or limited by membership? Hear from leading banks, high tech, and payment services providers leading the design, creation and management of payment networks to enable real-time cross-border intra-bank, consumer and corporate payments.

    Description

A global marketplace requires payments within and across international borders that are interoperable, real-time and cost-effective for all stakeholders. New digital solutions are being developed around the globe that disrupt the status quo to address unmet consumer and business remittance needs. In the US, the Federal Reserve Bank has assembled a task force to identify and assess alternative approaches for implementing safe, ubiquitous, faster payments capabilities. In this track, hear from the innovative organizations that are overcoming enormous technical and business challenges to enable a new breed of payments platforms.

"Ripple’s new global head of strategic accounts Marcus Treacher told CoinDesk, “The messaging today across borders is Swift. The de facto way everyone moves money through countries is Swift. That’s what we think we can do better with Ripple.”

Ripple’s XRP Gets Strong Vote of Confidence Following Global Bank Investments

This could simply be speculators, but utilization of Ripple’s technology can drive demand for the currency itself. Ripple specializes in the gigantic market for interbank settlement, the high level process where banks sort out how much money they owe each other after millions of daily transactions between customers.

Ripple has strategically built a technology stack that lets banks use whatever kind of ledger they want in house and settle via Ripple, which costs less than legacy systems, as Ripple CEO Chris Larsen explained for the Observer in our prior reporting. It saves much more if banks use its currency to smooth settling, which makes sense. If lots of different banks working in different currencies convert their funds into one cryptocurrency before squaring books with each other, the process should get a lot easier. If big banks come to use XRP in that way, that drives more non-speculative demand for XRP, which could keep the gains in place. Maybe.

    Helemaal mee eens

Some of the world’s more forward-thinking banks are investing heavily in blockchain technology. Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, UBS, Rabobank, Westpac and Commonwealth Bank are just a few working on blockchain.

While these banks will benefit, the companies that are bringing blockchain to the banks could profit the most. Companies such as Ripple and Circle are just two that will soon be household names.

Let’s be clear — blockchain technology is the new banking system. But in order for it to be a real success, the current banking system has to fail.

While the recent buzz on Bitcoin and Ethereum has gone cold as of late, Ripple has quietly been making quite a run within mainstream circles. Making fast friends within the banking industry of late, Ripple is starting to make an impact and may offer a future alternative to established global trading icons like SWIFT. However, something happened Monday morning that has never happened before in the history of Ripple. Here what we know so far.

Trading doubles within a half an hour

According to CoinMarketCap, Ripple has reached a new all-time market capitalization high in early Monday morning trading, or Sunday night if you are in the West. In one hour, Ripple trading volumes went from $3.25 million to over $8 million, pushing the market cap to a new record of over $1.25 Billion.

    Ripple market cap

However, Ripple trading on September 15th, 2016 reached higher levels, rates of over $22M, and Ripple’s values did not increase nearly this dramatically. Crypto Compare does corroborate that Ripple trading levels did spike Sunday/Monday.

This story is developing and we will learn more as the day and week progresses, but there is one theory that may explain it, depending on their influence. Crypto Facilities out of London has released information on a Ripple/XRP Futures/Derivatives trading platform that will launch on Tuesday morning. Here is part one of their five-part tweet on the subject.

Given that the primary volume buyers of Ripple at this point seem to be banks, and we all know the affinity bankers have for trading derivatives, this could explain the phenomenon. For a detailed description of their new platform, click here. Potentially, the bankers got wind of the new system and are moving in on it.

Ripple recently made news with their new Global Payments Steering Group (GPSG) that seeks to create a global bankers’ network that works off of proprietary Blockchain. The banks involved include Bank of America/Merrill Lynch, Santander, UniCredit, Standard Chartered, Westpac Banking Corporation, and Royal Bank of Canada.

Time will tell if this is a new sustainable market value for Ripple, but it appears that it has made quite an impression on the institutional market. We’ll update this story as it progresses.
