Patent battles
www.fiercemedicaldevices.com/special-...Illumina sues UK's Premaitha over alleged patent infringement. US genome sequencing giant claims Premaitha's flagship test breaches two patents
A small UK company that has recently launched a test to screen for Down's Syndrome in unborn babies is facing legal action from US gene sequencing giant Illumina over an alleged intellectual property breach.
Premaitha has been accused of infringing two of Illumina's patents in its sole product, a test which estimates the risk of Down's, Edwards' and Patau's syndromes in unborn babies.
The case relates to Premaitha's so-called Iona test, which detects the risk of genetic abnormalities by analysing traces of foetal DNA in the mother's blood.
Premaitha on Monday morning annunced that Swiss laboratory group Genoma would offer the Iona test to its customers, in what Dr Little described as a "major milestone" for the company.
