    This how the new 59€m Centre for Student Life will look.

    The huge building, will stretch 140m along Park Place and will be 28m high. The design will mask the existing 1970s student union building.

    Inside there will be a huge 550-seat lecture theatre, consultation spaces for student wellbeing, shops, a “student advice bar” and a “single gateway for all non-academic student inquiries”.

    Work will start later this year and it is hoped it will be completed for the 2019-20 academic year.

    There was huge opposition to it with historical groups among those who opposed the demolition of historic Victorian villas as part of the application.

    Wales has more to lose from a hard Brexit than other parts of the UK, warns Cardiff professor

    Network Rail, the Civic Society, and Victorian Society, as well as local councillors, all objected saying once historical buildings were lost they cannot be replaced.

    The university said the scheme was a way to bring their students into one place and has been described as a “heart for an otherwise disparate campus”.

    Architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios won the bid to design the building and BAM have been named as preferred bidder to carry out the pre-construction work.

    They have already worked with the university on two other buildings – the Hadyn Ellis and Cubric (Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre) buildings.

    BAM has been named preferred bidder to carry out pre-construction services for Cardiff University’s 59€m landmark Centre for Student Life.

    Work is expected to start later in 2017 and the new facility, a partnership with the Students’ Union, is expected to be completed by September 2019 for the start of the 2019/20 academic year.

    Cardiff University’s Centre for Student Life will be a central hub for student support services as well as housing learning spaces and a 550-seat lecture theatre.

    The building has been designed by architect Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, which is also working with BAM at London’s South Bank Centre.

    BAM construction director Craig Allen said: “Our appointment reflects the strength of the relationship we forged with Cardiff University working with them on the Hadyn Ellis and CUBRIC (Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre) buildings.

    “It also reflects BAM’s ability to meet the emphasis on the quality and buildability for what is a complex scheme. Good quality partnerships will be crucial for the realisation of this exciting development for students’ lives.”

    Je zou verwachten dat Bam vandaag profiteert van de mooi cijfers van Dura Vermeer en Van Wijnen. Beiden hebben ok mooie prognoses voor het lopende jaar. Blijkt helaas nog niet het geval. Verwachte opening op dit moment ondanks een hogere opening van de beurs slechts 5,02. Verwacht wel enige stijging in de lop van de dag.

    Bouwbedrijven zijn zeker voorzichtiger geworden, dat zie je bij BAM ook. Op dit moment is er best wel veel werk in de bouw, dan kan er ook meer marge worden gemaakt. Maar of de winstmarge voor langere tijd een stabiele factor wordt, daar heb ik nog wel twijfel over. Wanneer de bouw weer inzakt, komt de marge waarschijnlijk ook weer onder druk. Dan wordt het weer een gevecht om de orders. Het blijft een hele cyclische sector.
