    ArcelorMittal SA to cut staff as steel sector outlook dims

    Business Day reported that ArcelorMittal South Africa is to retrench more than 50 workers as the poor economy and continuing cheaper Chinese steel imports gave it no option but to review staffing levels. ," CEO Wim de Klerk said “Eskom and Transnet pricing had made it uncompetitive. Along with the rest of the South African steel industry, we continue to face serious challenges that are negatively impacting our profitability.”

    He said the company appreciated the steps taken by the government to protect the industry, such as import duties and the localisation of steel for infrastructure projects, but these would assist only in the medium to long-term.

    He said "We do not believe that the outlook is likely to change in the foreseeable future, especially with regards to the lack of investment in infrastructure development.”

    Meanwhile, the group's export sales were being hampered by weak international prices, rand volatility and rising input costs. To tackle this, De Klerk said, the group was looking to further cut costs. This included selling non-core assets and assessing its footprint. He said "It is for this reason that we have taken the difficult decision to begin a consultation process with employees.”

    Strong capesize rates push Baltic index higher

    Aug 17 (Reuters) - The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index , tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, rose on Thursday as rates for capesize vessels moved higher.

    The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize shipping vessels, was up 40 points, or 3.31 percent, at 1,247 points - highest since April 19.

    The capesize index climbed 218 points, or 9.38 percent, to 2,542 points, the highest since late March.

    Average daily earnings for capesizes, which typically transport 150,000-tonne cargoes such as iron ore and coal, were up $1,072 at $19,259.

    "The strong momentum in the capesize market is continuing to drive sentiment and earnings into the close of the week. With the available tonnage list remaining tight, capesize spot earnings have lifted to around $19,300/day worldwide," Clarksons Platou Securities analysts wrote in a note.

    The panamax index rose 26 points, or 1.98 percent, to 1,336 points.

    Average daily earnings for panamaxes, which usually carry coal or grain cargoes of about 60,000 to 70,000 tonnes, increased $209 to $10,703.

    Among smaller vessels, the supramax index rose 15 points to 791 points, while the handysize index inched up 1 point to 465 points.

    Vind het echt niet erg als een aandeel daalt. Meestal is daar wel een reden toe. Maar deze daling van vandaag bij een aandeel dat minimaal 30% te laag is gewaardeerd en zonder duidelijk aanwijsbare oorzaak daar word ik echt helemaal k*tjedol van. Maar goed, we zitten de rit wel weer uit. Eenmaal believer blijft believer...

    Dow Jones Iron and Steel Index zwaar in de min. Het is niet alleen AM dat het vandaag minder doet.
    Het is wel totaal onberekenbaar geworden. Stijging van een dag geeft geen garantie voor de toekomst. Succes allen.

    Duidelijk verhaal.
    Onder de € 22 zijn er geen aandelen meer te halen.
    1) koers op € 22.50 zetten.
    2) gewone man zet koers op € 22.65
    3) dan naar beneden stofzuigeren
    4) richting € 22 steeds meer weerstand
    5) weer naar boven stofzuigeren
    6) goede dag voor die grote partij heeft weer veel aandelen van de gewone man bemachtigd
    7) morgen gewoon verder up.
