    Waarom doe jij me toch altijd denken aan Einstein die beweerde dat twee dingen oneindig zijn, het universum en menselijke domheid terwijl hij van het eerste nog niet geheel zeker was?

    The armed conflict in Eastern Ukraine started in 2014. Between then and early 2022, it had already killed over 14,000 people. Over the course of eight years, Ukrainian government forces fought Russian-backed separatists for control over much of the two heavily industrialised regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, also known as Donbas. Fierce battles in 2014-2015 ended with one third of the regions’ territory, its most urbanised part, occupied by two Russian proxy statelets, the self-described Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics. Between September 2014 and February 2015, Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany signed several iterations of the so-called Minsk agreements, which eventually stopped the forward movement of troops and reduced fighting significantly.

    But the agreements were never implemented, and the fighting transformed into a trench war, with roughly 75,000 troops facing off along a 420-km-long front line cutting through densely populated areas.

    The war ruined the area’s economy and heavy industries, forced millions to relocate and turned the conflict zone into one of the world’s most mine-contaminated areas.

    Russia sees LGBT people as weapons of the West and further restricts their rights

    The office is at the end of a dimly lit corridor. Vladimir Komov apologizes for the mess. Three office chairs are used alternately by fifteen lawyers who work here in turn. In the corner is a huge stack of legal books. ‘We gratefully make use of these hand-outs from libraries.’

    Komov, a thirty-something with medium-length, dyed red hair, is a lawyer affiliated with Delo LGBT+, an organization that defends the rights of the LGBTI community in Russia. Previously, he was involved in organizing public protests. “But trying to exert pressure in that way is pointless in today’s Russia.”

    “We deliberately stayed here, we didn’t leave the country, like a lot of people do,” says Komov. ‘Our goal is to help the people who have stayed here’, the young activist and PR manager Robert Lebedev agrees. “We have to do something.”

    The Russian LGBTI community has reacted with shock to a new bill that criminalises ‘propaganda’ of ‘non-traditional sexual relations and/or preferences’. On Thursday, the State Duma, the Russian lower house, will vote on the proposal in first reading. There is no doubt that the proposed legislative changes will probably come into effect as early as next month. A majority of the Duma members are co-authors of the bill themselves.

    Pseudo values ??from the West

    At a parliamentary hearing earlier this month, the participants unanimously vehemently oppose the ‘LGBTI ideology’, which some speakers say is part of a ‘hybrid war’ the West is waging against Russia. “The ‘special military operation’ is not only taking place on the battlefield, but also in the minds of the people,” argues initiator Aleksandr Chinshtejn. “Russia is a bulwark for the defense of traditional values, a counterweight to the new pseudo-values ??imposed by the West.”

    During the hearing the word ‘Satanism’ is mentioned several times. Valeri Fadejev, head of the Presidential Advisory Council on Human Rights, calls the “LGBTI ideology” “a weapon against countries that disagree with the United States and what we call the collective West.” Sergei Mironov, leader of a Kremlin-loyal party, also speaks of ‘an information war, an ideological war being waged against us’.

    Homophobia is far from new in Russia. In Soviet times, sex between men was prohibited, it was not until 1993 that the relevant section of the law was deleted from the Criminal Code. In later years, timid attempts in Moscow or elsewhere in the country to hold gay parades regularly resulted in heavy-handed clashes with nationalist opponents.

    Human rights organizations such as Human Rights Watch recorded increasing violence against members of the LGBTI community in various regions of Russia. In 2017, the newspaper reported Novaja Gazeta on mass repression, torture and murder of gay men in Chechnya. At the same time, opinion polls show that tolerance towards sexual minorities in Russia has gradually increased in recent years.

    Booed in Amsterdam

    In 2013, ‘lgbti propaganda’ among minors was banned in Russia. It was one of the reasons Putin was booed in Amsterdam that year during his visit to the city. The Duma now wants to remove that age limit from the law and expand the law with new articles about ‘propaganda of pedophilia’ and ‘dissemination to minors of information that shows non-traditional sexual relations and/or preferences, or can arouse the desire in minors. to change gender’. Violations will result in unusually hefty fines that can amount to more than 13,000 euros for individual citizens.

    Robert Lebedev raises his hands despondently. ‘When they passed that law ‘to protect children’ at the time, there was still a logic to be discovered to a certain extent. But what they’re doing now sounds so unbelievably stupid. Arguments are now being advanced that are beyond my comprehension. Are they really so little sure of themselves that they see threats everywhere? Or do they try to justify their numerous mistakes and defeats by seeking enemies of the people?’

    Vladimir Komov also sees a direct link with Russia’s actions in Ukraine. “We have reached a point where such extremely radical and insane ideas are apparently necessary to divert attention from the current situation in the country.” He sees the new legislation above all as a political move, perhaps also to satisfy certain segments of society and to shock the outside world.

    Vulnerable LGBT community

    It is therefore quite possible that the law will ultimately not or hardly be applied, Komov thinks. ‘But even if that law is the product of the current political situation, it will eventually affect people of flesh and blood. Many people have left, our small LGBTI community is vulnerable. And sooner or later that gun hanging on the wall will be fired.”

    Reason enough to take the upcoming legislative changes seriously. ‘Look, all that still has to go through the paper shredder,’ laughs Lebedev, pointing to the information leaflets of his organization. “It can always serve as cat litter.”

    Commercial satellites from the United States and its allies could become legitimate targets for Moscow if they became involved in the war in Ukraine, a senior Russian foreign ministry official has threatened.

    According to the Russian news agency Tass, Konstantin Vorontsov, the deputy director of the foreign ministry’s department for non-proliferation and arms control, said:
    "Quasi-civilian infrastructure may be a legitimate target for a retaliatory strike. We are talking about the involvement of components of civilian space infrastructure, including commercial, by the United States and its allies in armed conflicts."

    Moscow’s aggression in Ukraine has killed tens of thousands, undermined the post-Covid global economic recovery and triggered the gravest confrontation with the west since the 1962 Cuban missile crisis.

    Oekraïne versterkt troepen bij grens met Belarus

    Oekraïne heeft volgens het Oekraïense leger uit angst voor een mogelijk nieuwe Russische aanval vanuit Belarus de troepen versterkt bij de grens in de noordelijke regio. "Op dit moment is het oprichten van een aanvalsmacht in Belarus niet waarneembaar. Maar er zijn en zullen bedreigingen zijn. We reageren en hebben onze troepen al in noordelijke richting uitgebreid", zegt een woordvoerder van de generale staf.

    Belarus is een belangrijke bondgenoot van Rusland in het conflict. Het land heeft Russische troepen al toegestaan zijn grondgebied te gebruiken als springplank voor aanvallen op buurland Oekraïne, maar het leger van Belarus heeft zich van de Russische aanval afzijdig gehouden.

    Bijna twee weken geleden maakte Belarus bekend dat er ongeveer 9000 Russische militairen naar het land komen om deel te nemen aan een nieuwe grensbewakingseenheid die het met Rusland opzet. Het zou volgens de Belarussen gaan om een defensieve eenheid, maar de EU heeft al eerder gezegd deze militaire samenwerking tussen beide landen te beschouwen als een "verdere escalatie" van het conflict.

    Hoge Russische ambtenaar: Joodse Chabad-beweging is een ‘neo-paganistische sekte’
    Alexei Pavlov, de adjunct-secretaris van de Veiligheidsraad van Rusland, heeft in een opiniestuk geschreven dat hij gelooft dat "neo-paganistische sektes aan kracht hebben gewonnen in Oekraïne," een van die sektes zou de Joodse Chabad beweging zijn. Dit meldt de Jerusalem Post.
    Chabad-Lubavitch is de meest zichtbaar aanwezige Joodse groep in Rusland en Oekraïne, en de beschuldiging heeft rabbijnen zeer geschokt.
    "Het belangrijkste doel van Chabad is de suprematie van de aanhangers van de sekte over alle naties en volkeren”, aldus Pavlov. Hij gaf een voorbeeld en zei dat de Joods-Oekraïense oligarch Igor Kolomoisky "een aanhanger van Chabad" zou zijn. Hij voegde eraan toe dat "een aantal andere Oekraïense oligarchen tot deze beweging behoren, met name Victor Pinchuk, die de schoonzoon is van de tweede president van Oekraïne.”
    De opperrabbijn van Rusland, Berel Lazar, heeft de uitspraken van Pavlov scherp veroordeeld als "vulgair antisemitisme". Lazar schreef aan Pavlov in reactie op zijn uitspraken: "Helaas bevat het artikel een moeilijk te begrijpen standpunt, anders dan een belediging voor miljoenen Joodse gelovigen, waaronder de overgrote meerderheid van de Joden in Rusland. De logica van Pavlov kan als onzin en vulgair worden betiteld, maar dit is een nieuwe vorm van klassieke Jodenhaat, en als ze worden uitgesproken door een lid van de Russische Veiligheidsraad, vormt dit een enorm gevaar voor Joden," benadrukte Lazar.

    Putin set to make speech at Russian think tank this afternoon

    The Russian president Vladimir Putin is due to make a speech at a meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club at 2pm GMT (15:00 Nederlandse tijd) today.

    The club is a think tank with close links to the Kremlin, which is generally considered to be part of Moscow’s propaganda machine.

    Putin gives an annual speech at its event and you will be able to follow along here in about half an hour.
