   Families of Americans held abroad team up to pressure Biden

   July 7 (Reuters) - Families of U.S. citizens detained abroad are stepping up pressure on President Joe Biden to intervene to try to free them - some held by adversaries including Russia, China and Iran - but his administration has struggled to outline a strategy.
   
   Saying that quiet lobbying of the administration has produced only limited results, the families have begun to collectively raise their voices to urge Biden to make the issue a higher priority and for the U.S. officials to take steps such as arranging further prisoner swaps with foreign governments.
   
   Two Americans detained overseas - two-time Olympic gold medal-winning basketball star Brittney Griner in Russia and Iranian-American businessman Siamak Namazi in Iran - have made separate public pleas to Biden in recent days asking him to take action to end their captivity.    The U.S. government has not disclosed an official number of Americans detained abroad.
   
   The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation, named after an American journalist abducted and killed in Syria, lists more than 60 U.S. citizens wrongfully in countries including Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China, Cuba, Egypt, Iran, Mali, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, Uganda, the United Arab Emirates, Venezuela and Yemen.
   
   Russia's April release of former U.S. Marine Trevor Reed intensified calls by relatives of others held overseas for Biden to act. Reed was freed after three years of detention as part of a prisoner swap with Russia at a time of heightened tensions between the countries due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In this deal, Biden commuted the sentence of Konstantin Yaroshenko, a Russian pilot who served time in a U.S. prison.
   
   'STRONGER TOGETHER'
   
   "The momentum and collective voice that you see among us - the families - was, I think, really sparked by the Reed release," said Neda Shargi, sister of Iranian-American businessman Emad Shargi, detained in 2015 while visiting his family in Tehran.
   
   "Even though individual cases are different, we know that what the president needs to do is the same for all of us," she added. "We are stronger together than in our individual advocacy for our loved ones."
   
   Some families have tried to make their efforts more visible, launching the Bring Our Families Home Campaign and even demonstrating outside the White House.
   
   Several weeks before Reed's release, his parents met with Biden after demonstrating outside the White House. Families now believe that the path to securing releases begins with a face-to-face appointment with Biden, a view the administration has sought to dissuade.
   
   "The team works hard to secure the release of every single person who is wrongfully detained or a hostage regardless of whether they have a POTUS (president of the United States) meeting," said a White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
   
   Biden has a presidential envoy for hostage affairs at the State Department named Roger Carstens. The White House official said there is another person on Biden's National Security Council dealing with the issue of detained Americans, but did not say who.
   
   Jonathan Franks, a crisis management consul who represents several hostage families and worked on Reed's case, said, "There has been a decision among many families to be more high profile."
   
   Just days after Griner's wife, Cherelle Griner, said in an interview with CNN that she wanted to meet with Biden, both the president and Vice President Kamala Harris spoke with her by phone. The White House said Biden directed his team to remain in regular contact with Griner's family and with the families of other detained Americans.
   
   'FAILED SPECTACULARLY'
   
   Secretary of State Antony Blinken last month held a video call with families of detained Americans, while Biden's National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan held a similar session last year. U.S. officials have said the administration works "aggressively" to bring people home and regularly talks to the families.
   
   Some of the families have said they appreciate what they see as increased attention from Biden's administration, but note that they are mostly hearing sympathy rather than getting a clear roadmap for action.
   
   Namazi in his New York Times essay decried an incarceration that began in 2015, saying the Biden administration's approach to freeing detainees in Iran has "failed spectacularly so far."
   
   "Unless the president intervenes immediately, we are likely to languish in this abyss for the foreseeable future," Namazi wrote.
   
   Some family members have accused Biden's administration of being reluctant to make prisoner swaps or appear to be making concessions by agreeing to policy demands, creating what U.S. officials have called a "moral hazard."
   
   "Our government does deals and negotiates with dictators, with communist governments for the purpose of economic reasons, trade reasons," Reed's father Joey said. "And yet, when it comes to bringing innocent Americans home, they're very reluctant."
   
   Opponents of prisoner swaps inside and outside the U.S. government have said such action incentivizes more hostage-taking overseas and might be seen as a political concession. However, Reed's release earned bipartisan praise for the administration in Washington.

   Canada's Ukrainians urge Trudeau to refuse Russian demand to return gas turbine

   OTTAWA, July 7 (Reuters) - Canada's Ukrainian community is urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to refuse to compromise the country's sanctions against Russia in order to return a turbine that Moscow says is critical for supplying natural gas to Germany.
   
   Russia's state-controlled Gazprom cut the capacity along the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to just 40% of usual levels last month, citing the delayed return of equipment being serviced by Germany's Siemens Energy in Canada.
   
   Canada has one of the world's biggest Ukrainian diasporas outside of countries that border Ukraine and has successfully pressured Ottawa to impose increasingly strict sanctions against Russia since it invaded Ukraine in February.
   
   Ukrainian Canadian Congress national president Alexandra Chyczij urged Trudeau, in a letter on Wednesday, to see through Russia's "obvious ploy" to divide Ukraine's allies.
   
   Ottawa should instead broker a solution that does not involve waiving sanctions, she wrote in the letter, posted on the Congress's website.
   
   "Any waiver of Canadian sanctions would be viewed as a capitulation to Russian blackmail and energy terrorism, and would only serve to embolden the Russian terrorist state," Chyczij said.
   
   A Canadian government source said the Ukrainian government itself opposes the turbine's return.
   
   Trudeau's office had no immediate comment on the letter.
   
   "We will not stop imposing severe costs on the Putin regime while their unjustifiable invasion is ongoing and we will continue to support our European friends and allies," said Ian Cameron, spokesman for Canada's natural resources minister, in a statement.
   
   A spokesperson for the Russian embassy in Ottawa did not immediately comment.
   
   The technical problem with the turbine is merely a Russian pretext, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said last week. [nL8N2YH1TU]
   
   Canada, alongside its Western allies, has issued sweeping sanctions on Russia after Moscow sent troops into Ukraine in what the Kremlin calls a "special military operation."

   KYIV/BAKHMUT, Ukraine, July 7 (Reuters) - Vladimir Putin on Thursday accused the West of decades of aggression towards Moscow and warned that if it wanted to attempt to beat Russia on the battlefield it was welcome to try, but this would bring tragedy for Ukraine.
   
   His remarks came as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov prepared for a closed-door foreign minister's meeting at a G20 gathering in Indonesia on Friday which will be the first time Putin's top diplomat comes face-to-face with the most vocal opponents of the invasion of Ukraine in February.    In Ukraine, the regional governor of the northeastern city of Kharkiv said late on Thursday that three people had been killed and another five wounded after Russian forces shelled the city.
   
   Russian forces also shelled other potential conquests in eastern Ukraine ahead of an expected new offensive.
   
   "We have heard many times that the West wants to fight us to the last Ukrainian. This is a tragedy for the Ukrainian people, but it seems that everything is heading towards this," Putin said in televised remarks to parliamentary leaders. [L8N2YO5MU]
   
   The West had failed in its attempt to contain Russia, and its sanctions on Moscow had caused difficulties but "not on the scale intended," Putin added. Russia did not reject peace talks, but the further the conflict went, the harder it would be to reach agreement, he said.
   
   Earlier, Kyiv lost one of its main international supporters after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he would step down. Ukraine said it expected Britain's support to continue and thanked Johnson for defending Ukraine's interests, while Moscow did not conceal its delight at the political demise of a leader whom it has long criticised for arming Kyiv so energetically.    In a phone call, Johnson told Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy "You're a hero, everybody loves you," a spokesman for Johnson said. [nFWN2YO2Q2]
   
   Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba described the British Prime Minister as a "true friend of Ukraine" for being among the first world leaders to unequivocally condemn the invasion and also "to help Ukraine defend itself and ultimately win this war in the future."
   
   Johnson's resignation comes at a time of domestic turmoil in some other European countries that support Kyiv and doubts about their staying power for what has become a protracted conflict.
   
   The day began with Ukraine's defiant flag-raising ceremony on its recaptured Snake Island in the Black Sea, located about 140 km (90 miles) south of the Ukrainian port of Odesa.
   
   Moscow was quick to respond, with its warplanes striking the strategic island shortly afterwards and destroying part of the Ukrainian detachment there, it said.
   
   Russia abandoned the island at the end of June in what it said was a gesture of goodwill - a victory for Ukraine that Kyiv hoped could loosen Moscow's blockade of Ukrainian ports.
   
   Andriy Yermak, the Ukrainian president's chief of staff, suggested the raising of the blue and yellow national flag there was a moment that would be repeated across Ukraine.
   
   KRAMATORSK
   
   Russian forces in eastern Ukraine meanwhile kept up pressure on Ukrainian troops trying to hold the line along the northern borders of the Donetsk region, in preparation for an anticipated wider offensive against it.
   
   After taking the city of Lysychansk on Sunday and effectively cementing their total control of Ukraine's Luhansk region, Moscow has made clear it is planning to capture parts of the neighbouring Donetsk region which it has not yet seized. Kyiv still controls some large cities.
   
   The mayor of the Donetsk city of Kramatorsk said Russian forces had fired missiles at the city centre in an air strike on Thursday and that at least one person was killed and six wounded.
   
   Pavlo Kyrylenko, governor of the Donetsk region, said the missile had damaged six buildings including a hotel and an apartment bloc in the large industrial hub. [L8N2YO3NZ]
   
   Reuters could not independently verify those assertions.
   
   In Kramatorsk, mechanic-turned-soldier Artchk helped shore up defences against imminent Russian attack while, nearby, farmer Vasyl Avramenko lamented the loss of crops supplanted by mines.
   
   "Of course we're already prepared. We're ready," Artchk, identifying himself by his nom-de-guerre, told Reuters.
   
   "It's their (Russians') fantasy to occupy these cities, but they don't expect the level of resistance. It's not just the Ukrainian government, it's the people who refuse to accept them." [nL8N2YO0RT]
   
   Russia denies targeting civilians in what it calls a "special military operation" to demilitarise Ukraine, root out dangerous nationalists and protect Russian speakers.
   
   Ukraine and its allies say Russia launched an imperial-style land grab with February's invasion, starting the biggest conflict in Europe since World War Two which has killed thousands, displaced millions and flattened cities.

    De Nederlander Leo de Lange leefde vier maanden onder Russische bezetting in de Zuid-Oekraïense stad Cherson, en bracht zich via een riskante vlucht in veiligheid. Vanuit Georgië vertelt hij zijn verhaal.
    
    De Lange, een voormalige accountmanager die zijn brood de laatste tijd verdiende met de handel in cryptomunten, kwam sinds september vorig jaar regelmatig in Cherson, waar zijn vriendin geboren en getogen is. Eind januari besloot hij zich definitief te vestigen in de stad die eind 18de eeuw door tsarina Catherina de Grote werd gesticht. "Ik had net mijn derde les Russisch gehad toen de Russen binnenvielen."
    
    Een onzekere tijd brak aan, waarbij de Russische repressie steeds verder toenam. Arrestaties en verdwijningen waren er aan de orde van de dag. "Een bekende van mij, een Amerikaan, werd opgepakt. Twee dagen later verscheen hij in een video op een pro-Russisch Telegramkanaal, in een donkere ruimte met de angst in zijn ogen. Daarna hebben we niets meer van hem vernomen."
    
    Het Amerikaanse ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken weet van de zaak, maar kan om privacyredenen geen commentaar geven.
    
    Als een vakantie
    De Lange besefte dat hij als buitenlander gevaar liep. "We besloten veel in onze datsja buiten de stad te verblijven, maar ook daar verschenen de Russen." Hij toont een foto van een boot met zo'n 25 zwaarbewapende militairen, met twee arrestanten, van wie er één een oud-politiecommissaris zou zijn.
    
    Die druppel deed de emmer overlopen. Hij besloot te vertrekken, via de Krim en Rusland naar Georgië, met zijn vriendin en haar dochter. Kennissen zouden op zijn huis passen. Op een vroege ochtend reden ze weg, met een tas vol kleren, eten en drinken. "We namen niet veel mee. Alsof je op vakantie gaat."
    
    Het werd geen vakantie. Onderweg waren wegblokkades, waarbij "het Nederlandse paspoort met interesse werd bekeken". Bij de grens van de Krim volgde een lange wachttijd. "Er stonden zo'n 50 auto's voor ons, maar uiteindelijk moesten we acht uur wachten."
    
    Ook daar trok zijn paspoort de aandacht van de beambten. "Toen werd ik ondervraagd, in een amateuristisch hokje, een soort container. Er werden ook mug shot-foto's gemaakt." Dat De Lange geen Russisch sprak, leidde tot nervositeit, maar gelukkig mocht zijn vriendin vertalen.
    
    De ondervraging duurde 1,5 à 2 uur. "Er werd naar alles gevraagd, van mijn eerste baan tot de geboortedatum van mijn ouders. Tussendoor werden opmerkingen gemaakt als 'Westerlingen zijn dom' en 'Erg hè, dat Oekraïne vol nazi's zit'." Noodgedwongen stemde hij daarmee in.
    
    Zak over het hoofd
    Na een uur werd De Lange opnieuw ondervraagd, met dezelfde vragen. "Toen begon het naar te worden. Mijn vriendin werd gevraagd waarom we eigenlijk weg willen. "De explosies", zei ze. "Dat komt door de Oekraïners hè?" werd gezegd." Weer een uur later werd hij nogmaals intimiderend ondervraagd.
    
    "Ik was bang dat ik opeens een zak over mijn hoofd zou krijgen en zou verdwijnen", zegt De Lange. "Ze spelen heel erg op je gevoel in. Ze laten je doen wat ze willen, al je menselijkheid wordt afgepakt." Nadat er was gebeld met 'Moskou' kreeg het stel te horen dat ze mochten doorreizen.
    
    Een dag later arriveerden ze in de Russische stad Krasnodar. Hartelijk werden ze niet ontvangen. "Met een Oekraïens nummerbord ben je een nazi en word je gek aangekeken." Onderweg probeerde hij een vrachtwagen met een grote Z in te halen. "Maar hij ging opeens naar links. Daarna deed ik nog twee pogingen, en telkens weer reed hij naar links. Hij wilde mij van de weg rijden!"

    Iedere moordenaar en/of verkrachter komt voor het tribunaal in Den Haag te staan, tot de hoogste rangen toe.
    
    Komende 20 jaar (of langer) volledige uitsluiting van deelname aan WK's of Olympische Spelen voor alle denkbare sporten.
    
    5 jaar lang, dagelijkse TV uitzending van een ongecensureerde versie m.b.t. deze oorlog en wandaad.

    Niks 'zinloos'.
    
    In die landen (niet bepaald de fijnste) worden bakken met geld verdiend.
    De miljardairs daar en de overheden daar zien, wat er met de tegoeden van Rusland/Russen gebeurt.
    Dat kan hen óók overkomen.
    
    We gaan zien, of en zo ja hoe de geldstromen en investeringen zich gaan wijzigen.
    
    In ieder geval is het Westen geen 'veilige haven' meer, zeker niet voor landen, met wie het Westen op gespannen voet staat.

    Rusland is zijn wonden aan het likken na de verovering van de Luhansk Provincie
    
    De Russische soldaten moeten bijkomen van de zware inspanningen en ook aan hun kant zware verliezen aan manschappen en materiaal
