    ArcelorMittal cut at BofA with European steel margins lowest since 2020

    ArcelorMittal (NYSE:MT) -4% in Wednesday's trading as Bank of America downgraded the stock to Neutral from Buy with a €25 price target, saying higher interest rates mean a slowdown in the world economy, and thus less demand for steel.

    With steel prices stagnating and raw materials squeezing higher, European steel spreads are under pressure, and while the European steel sector including ArcelorMittal (MT) exhibits value, the steel sector is in an earnings downgrade cycle, BofA analyst Patrick Mann said.

    The European steel spread - i.e. the steel price minus raw materials, a key profitability driver - has compressed to its lowest margin since Q3 2020 on rising prices for raw materials including coking coal and lower steel prices YTD, Mann said.

    The analyst also thinks the possibility of M&A activity has been an overhang on the stock; ArcelorMittal (MT) has been mentioned as a potential bidder for US Steel, and Mann thinks the stock could come under pressure if the company confirms such a bid, while a definitive announcement that it is not bidding could be a positive catalyst for the stock.

    Nou gelukkig niet.
    Dat zou ik juist heel erg vinden.
    Gisteren mega omlaag, toen kwam het nieuws en gingen we bijna niet verder omlaag.
    Nu omhoog zelfs, ik ga dan echt denken dat er voorkennis was.
    Was heel vreemd.

    Zou iemand me kunnen helpen? Welke ' trackers' of sector index in de gaten houden voor de staalprijzen?
    En valt dit bijvoorbeeld onder basic resources (of moet dit juist omlaag want zijn de grondstoffen voor staal) of valt het onder construction en materials?

    Steel Dynamics Q3 Profits Dipped on Lower Steel Prices
    Scrap Monster - Thu Oct 19, 4:50PM CDT

    SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Fort Wayne, Indiana-headquartered Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI) announced third quarter 2023 financial results.
    The company reported net income of $577 million, or $3.47 per diluted share during the quarter. This compares with prior year third quarter net income of $914 million, or $5.03 per diluted share and sequential second quarter 2023 net income of $812 million, or $4.81 per diluted share. The net sales for the quarter stood at $4.6 billion.

    The steel operations of the company generated operating income of $474 million, representing over one-third decline over the sequential quarter. The selling price of products from SDI’s steel operations averaged at $1,191 per ton. The ferrous scrap cost per ton melted at the company’s steel mills averaged at $405 per ton.
    The Q3 operating income from metals recycling operations recorded notable decline by 54% to $19 million. The outages at steel mills on account of maintenance impacted domestic ferrous scrap demand.
    The steel fabrication operations recorded strong operating income of $330 million in third quarter of 2023.
    During the initial nine-month period of the year, SDI reported net income was $2.0 billion, or $11.98 per diluted share, compared with net income of $3.2 billion, or $17.21 per diluted share a year before. The net sales during the period was $14.6 billion, down from $17.4 billion for Jan-Sep ’22.

    Aex hersteld al met de helft en AM zakt nog verder weg.
    Er is totaal geen geloof meer in het aandeel.
