TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan's opposition Nationalist, or Kuomintang, Party won a landslide victory in legislative elections Saturday, dealing a humiliating blow to the government's hard-line China policies two months before a presidential poll.

The Kuomintang and allies won 87 of 113 legislative seats, Kuomintang Chairman Wu Poh-Hsiung said. The Kuomintang, which favors closer ties with China, won 81 seats outright. Other opposition seats went to two small allied parties.

President Chen Shui-bian resigned as chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party immediately after his party's defeat. "I should shoulder all responsibilities," Mr. Chen said. "I feel really apologetic and shamed."

The results are a humiliation for Mr. Chen, who has been criticized for aggravating relations with Beijing by promoting policies to formalize Taiwan's de facto independence from China. Critics say that has allowed Taiwan's once vibrant economy to lose competitiveness and ratcheted up tension in the perennially edgy Taiwan Strait.

A March 22 presidential election to choose a successor to Mr. Chen, who must step down after eight years in office, pits Frank Hsieh of Mr. Chen's Democratic Progressive Party against the Kuomintang's Ma Ying-jeou. Recent opinion polls give Mr. Ma a 20-point lead.

The Kuomintang had been forecast to win but the victory exceeded expectations and the win gives Mr. Ma strong momentum heading into the presidential election. Investors have been rooting for a Kuomintang win in both the legislative and presidential races, saying better relations with China will be good for business and financial markets.

EA Enters Agreement With GigaMedia to Operate Highly Anticipated MMORPG - WARHAMMER(R) ONLINE: AGE OF RECKONING(TM) in Taiwan
Thursday January 31, 1:00 am ET

TAIPEI, Taiwan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS - News), the world’s leading developer and publisher of interactive entertainment and GigaMedia Ltd (NASDAQ:GIGM - News), a major provider of online entertainment software and services, announced today that the companies have entered into an agreement to launch and operate WARHAMMER® ONLINE: AGE OF RECKONING™ (WAR) in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. Based on Games Workshop’s Warhammer fantasy universe, the online game features next generation Realm vs. Realm™ (RvR) game play that will immerse players in a world of perpetual conflict.

The agreement between EA and GigaMedia also aims to provide the ultimate MMORPG gaming experience for players in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. Working closely with the EA Mythic development team, GigaMedia will provide marketing, community management, technical support, and customer service functions. Further details concerning the release schedule will be announced in the months ahead. Last November, EA also announced its partnership with GigaMedia to operate NBA Street Online in the same territories.

Warhammer Online is currently in development at EA Mythic, the studio which first gained worldwide critical acclaim for revolutionizing online gaming with the award winning Dark Age of Camelot™. WAR’s Realm vs. Realm game play has players joining one of six Armies - the obstinate Dwarfs, the noble High Elves, the loyal humans of the Empire, the savage Greenskins, the corrupt Dark Elves or the marauding human worshippers of Chaos - to experience the truly epic nature of war. Warhammer Online also features an innovative Public Quest™ system and a massive City Siege campaign that allows players to sack and pillage an enemy capital.

Arthur M. Wang, Chief Executive Officer of GigaMedia, said, “We are pleased and honored to become EA’s operating partner on another groundbreaking online game. GigaMedia will bring this most anticipated MMORPG title, WARHAMMER ONLINE: AGE OF RECKONING, into Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. We are sure that local players will warmly embrace and welcome this great game.”

"It is a privilege to work with GigaMedia to bring our game to Asia’s vibrant and growing population of MMORPG fans,” says Mark Jacobs, VP and General Manager of EA Mythic. “Warhammer Online is widely anticipated in both North America and Europe. With Giga Media as a partner, we expect that Asian gamers will have a lot to look forward to.”

Jon Niermann, President, EA Asia, said, “We are very excited to be partnering with GigaMedia on this project and delivering it in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. The MMORPG fantasy genre is a tried and tested success formula - especially in Asia - and we look forward to introducing a new audience to the uniquely dark, gritty, and humorous world of WARHAMMER ONLINE: AGE OF RECKONING.”

UPDATE 1-Electronic Arts sees China among top 3 Asia markets

    By Sophie Taylor

SHANGHAI, Feb 19 (Reuters) - U.S. video game publisher Electronic Arts Inc (ERTS.O: Quote, Profile, Research) expects China to join Japan and South Korea as one of its three largest markets by revenue in Asia-Pacific in two to three years.

EA, which has more than 200 employees developing online games in China and purchased a stake last year in The9 Ltd (NCTY.O: Quote, Profile, Research), also expects China to become one of its three fastest-growing Asian markets in a year or two, Asia General Manager Jon Niermann said in an interview on Tuesday.

China, where online games are dominant, is still a relatively small market for EA, which has traditionally marketed video games for consoles such as Microsoft Corp's (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) Xbox and Sony Corp's (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) PlayStation.

"The focus really is about how do we capture online game market share, and mobile game market share, and the biggest focus for me right now is online games in China and Korea," said Niermann, a former Disney executive.

"By percent growth year-on-year, China is about mid of where our countries are across Asia, and we expect (China) to go to the top three positions certainly in the next year or two," he added.

Online games, which allow players to compete simultaneously over the Internet, are particularly popular in China as they are less expensive than consoles.

    PIRACY CONCERNS

In North America, where individual computer and console gaming dominates, the crossover success of "World of Warcraft", a multiplayer online game, has given U.S. companies a reason to take online games seriously.

EA and China-based rival Shanda Interactive Entertainment Ltd (SNDA.O: Quote, Profile, Research) also prefer the online gaming format in China over console-based games, as online games are difficult to copy illegally and piracy is a major concern in the country.

France's Ubisoft Entertainment SA (UBIP.PA: Quote, Profile, Research), which creates, publishes and distributes console games, has also said it was looking for a partner in China to help it enter the booming online gaming market.

EA's blockbuster franchises include "Madden NFL", "The Sims", "FIFA Soccer" and "Need for Speed".

China's fast-growing game market is expected to reach more than 32 billion yuan ($4.47 billion) by 2011, according to Beijing-based research firm Analysys International.

Niermann expects Asia-Pacific -- which made up 5 percent of EA's net revenue of $3.1 billion in its 2007 fiscal year compared with 6 percent the previous year -- to grow as a proportion of total revenue, but declined to give a specific forecast. EA Chief Executive John Riccitiello said last week that the company forecast revenue to exceed $6 billion by fiscal 2011, with digital revenue to be at least $900 million.

"If you look at the FY11 number, Asia certainly needs to be a strong part of that $6 billion within the company," Niermann said. ($1=7.152 Yuan) (Reporting by Sophie Taylor; Editing by Edmund Klamann)

November 14, 2007 GigaMedia Q3: Record Revenues, Up 76% Y-o-Y; Everest Poker Awarded Poker Operation of the Year

August 14, 2007 GigaMedia Q2: Record Operating Results; Strong Demand for Poker Software and Online Casual Games Drives 119% Growth in Operating Income

May 22, 2007 GigaMedia Q1 Net Profit up 167%; Everest Poker Continues Strong Momentum

    March 13, 2007 GigaMedia 2006 Net Profit Up 386% to US$31 Million; 4Q Net Profit of US$9.9 Million, Up 52% Q-o-Q

    Outlook (http://www.gigamedia.com.tw/outlook.htm)

The following forward-looking statements reflect GigaMedia’s expectations as of August 14, 2007. Given potential changes in economic conditions and consumer spending, the evolving nature of online entertainment software, online games and broadband ISP services, and various other risk factors, including those discussed in the Company’s 2006 Annual Report or 20-F filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission referenced below, actual results may differ materially.

Gaming software business. In the second half of 2007, we expect continued strong revenue growth in our gaming software business, partially moderated in the third quarter by traditional softness in online gaming during the summer season and increased competition in our markets.

Asian online games business. We expect continued revenue growth in the second half resulting from scheduled new game launches on FunTown’s and T2CN’s platform, as well as full quarterly revenue contributions from T2CN. We anticipate such growth to be accompanied by increased marketing expenses in the third quarter related to these new game launches and personnel and promotions expenses related to HellGate: London.

Broadband ISP business. We expect revenues in our legacy broadband ISP business to continue to decline moderately in the third quarter in line with plans.
