   PARIJS (AFN) - Regeringen en belastingbetalers zijn nu per jaar 500 miljard dollar (380 milard euro) kwijt aan subsidies voor het produceren en consumeren van energie en dat dreigt op te lopen tot 660 miljard dollar in 2020.
   
   Dit heeft het Internationaal Energie Agentschap (IEA) dinsdag bekend gemaakt. In 2010 ging het nog om 409 miljard dollar. Regeringsleiders van de G20, twintig landen met grote economieën, spraken in 2009 af om geleidelijk een einde te maken aan de subsidies, omdat ze een rem zetten op groene energie.

   JSPL to build 2640 MW power plant in Mozambique
   
   Reuters reported that Mozambique has granted India's Jindal Steel & Power Limited approval to build a 2,640 MW coal fired power plant in the country's Tete province.
   
   The plant, estimated to cost USD 3 billion, is expected to start operating in 2015. The power will be sold domestically and to the southern African region.
   
   Mozambique's Tete province in home to some of the world's largest untapped coal reserves, with miners such as Vale and Rio Tinto investing heavily in the area.

   Guangxi power rationing saves 3 TWh
   
   Interfax China quoted according to statistics released by the Guangxi Electricity Power Co Ltd that power rationing in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region reduced industrial electricity use by roughly 3.2 terawatt hours from June to August
   
   The power provider said the power stoppages affected some 1,000 firms, causing hundreds of millions of dollars in losses over the three month period.
   
   With prolonged droughts and paltry coal supplies up to 30% of the region's power demands went unfulfilled during the peak summer consumption period, leading to the worst power shortage in 20 years.
   
   GEPC began rationing commercial power supplies in June to ensure supplies for consumers and public facilities.

   DEN HAAG (AFN) - Energiemaatschappij ENI heeft een gasbel ontdekt vlak voor de kust van Mozambique. Dat maakte het Italiaanse bedrijf donderdag bekend. Volgens ENI is de gasbel de grootste ooit ontdekt in de geschiedenis van het energiebedrijf.
   
   De gasbel ligt meer dan 1500 meter onder de zeespiegel, circa 40 kilometer buiten de kust in het noorden van het Afrikaanse land. Naar verluidt heeft de gasbel een inhoud van 425 miljard kubieke meter. Ter vergelijking: de gasbel bij het Groningse Slochteren, die halverwege vorige eeuw werd ontdekt, was krap zeven keer zo groot.

   Energy Deal To Create Biggest Firm In Pipelines

   Kinder Morgan agreed on Sunday to buy the El Paso Corporation for about $21.1 billion in cash and stock, striking one of the biggest energy deals in history, to tap into a boom in natural gas drilling and production.
   Through the deal, Kinder Morgan will become the biggest of North America's midstream energy companies, which are entities that process oil and gas products before transporting them to production facilities. Kinder Morgan will own or operate about 67,000 miles of pipelines stretching across the continent.
   ''If you believe in the future of natural gas, you believe in putting together the biggest possible network,'' Richard D. Kinder, Kinder Morgan's chief executive, said in an interview. He added that the deal was ''a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.''
   Drilling and producing oil and gas from shale and other tight rocks has taken off in the last five years, as Exxon Mobil and other major energy companies have purchased smaller players with sizable stakes in the big shale fields. But many of the country's shale fields, including the Bakken in North Dakota, the Eagle Ford in south Texas and the Marcellus in Pennsylvania, lack the pipeline capacity to carry all the oil and gas being produced there. The surge in output has produced such a glut that the price of natural gas has plummeted, and excess gas is being burned off instead of being captured.
   Other energy pipeline companies have sought to combine as well. This summer, Energy Transfer Equity and the Williams Companies jousted over another pipeline operator, the Southern Union Company. Energy Transfer appears to have won the bidding with a $5.9 billion offer that Southern Union accepted in July.
   The combined company, which will keep the Kinder Morgan name, is expected to move more than 1.9 million barrels of fuels a day. It will also operate the only oil sands pipeline that services the West Coast.
   ''This makes Kinder Morgan the dominant pipeline company in the country,'' Chip Johnson, the chief executive of Carrizo Oil and Gas, a midsize driller in the shale fields, said. ''They are everywhere now. They can deliver gas all over the country.''
   Including the assumption of debt owed by El Paso and an affiliated business, El Paso Pipeline Partners, the takeover is valued at about $38 billion. That makes it the second-biggest deal announced this year and the largest energy deal since Exxon Mobil bought XTO Energy for $40.8 billion in late 2009, according to Standard & Poor's bought XTO Energy for $40.8 billion in late 2009, according to Capital IQ.
   Kinder Morgan is paying a big premium for El Paso. For each share of El Paso, Kinder will pay $14.65 in cash, o.4187 of a Kinder share and 0.640 of a warrant. At Friday's closing price, that values the offer at about $26.87. That is a 37 percent premium to El Paso's Friday closing price and a 47 percent premium to El Paso's 20-day average closing price.
   Despite the high price, Kinder Morgan argues that the transaction will provide big rewards for shareholders. The company said that it expected to begin raising its dividend next year at an average annual rate of about 12.5 percent through 2015.
   Kinder Morgan, which has received financing from Barclays Capital to pay for the cash portion of the deal, plans to sell El Paso's exploration and production business to help pay down that debt. El Paso had already announced in May it would spin off those businesses, which account for about 34 percent of its annual revenue, to its shareholders.
   The deal's is expected to close by the second quarter next year. Kinder Morgan shareholders will own about 68 percent of the combined company, while El Paso shareholders will own the rest.
   The El Paso purchase is the latest deal by Mr. Kinder, a former president of Enron who founded Kinder Morgan in 1997. Since then, he has spearheaded several deals that have transformed the firm into one of the nation's biggest pipeline operators. In 2006, he took the company private in a $22 billion deal, backed by a consortium that included Goldman Sachs's private equity arm and the Carlyle Group.
   Kinder Morgan re-emerged as a publicly traded entity in February in one of the largest initial public offerings by a company owned by private equity firms, raising nearly $2.9 billion.
   The genesis of the deal lay in that I.P.O. While Kinder Morgan had held talks with El Paso's management about a possible merger for years, it needed the currency of a public stock to complete such a deal, Mr. Kinder said.
   He approached El Paso's chief executive, Douglas L. Foshee, in August about a potential deal, three months after El Paso announced its break-up plans.
   ''I had to go on bended knee to Doug,'' Mr. Kinder said.
   He added that it was unlikely that Kinder Morgan would pursue a deal of this size again, though the company planned to take advantage of other opportunities to grow.
   The transaction is subject to approval by both Kinder Morgan and El Paso shareholders. Mr. Kinder owns more than 30 percent of his company, while El Paso's largest shareholders include the activist investorCarl C. Icahn, who owns a 6 percent stake, and Jana Partners, which holds about a 3.2 percent stake.
   While Mr. Kinder said he did not expect the deal to be blocked by antitrust regulators, he added that both companies would work with the Federal Trade Commission to pare excessive overlap in their pipeline networks.
   El Paso has agreed not to seek any higher rival offers, and would be obligated to pay Kinder Morgan a $650 million break-up fee under certain circumstances. Kinder will add two new seats to its board, to be filled by two El Paso directors.
   Kinder Morgan was advised by Evercore Partners, Barclays and the Weil Gotshal & Manges and Bracewell Giuliani firms. El Paso was advised by Morgan Stanley for this deal, and had already been receiving advice from Goldman Sachs on its previous spinoff plan. It received legal counsel from Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz.

   ARNHEM (AFN) - De elektriciteitshandel met andere landen groeit steeds verder, de grensoverschrijdende intraday handel was in september verdubbeld ten opzichte van begin van dit jaar. Dat meldde netbeheerder TenneT donderdag.
   
   Volgens TenneT neemt de internationale handel in en het transport van elektriciteit op dezelfde dag steeds verder toe. Dat komt vooral door een toename in de productie en het gebruik van duurzame energie.
   
   De zogenoemde cross-border intradaymarkt is sinds 2008 mogelijk met Duitsland en sinds 2009 kan dat ook met België. Vooral de toename van de productie en het gebruik van duurzame energie zijn een boost voor de grensoverschrijdende elektriciteitshandel. Omdat de productie van duurzame energie zoals wind- en zonne-energie zich niet laat sturen, is er om fluctuaties op te vangen meer vraag naar grensoverschrijdende handel en transport.
   
   Het energieverbruik in Nederland is in de maand september ietsje hoger uitgekomen dan in dezelfde maand vorig jaar, meldde TenneT ook.

   AMSTERDAM (AFN) - Energieconcerns verwachten dat gas en stroom volgend jaar duurder worden. Dat bleek donderdag uit navraag bij Nuon en Essent. De energierekening van een gemiddeld Nederlands huishouden bedraagt nu rond de 1900 euro per jaar.
   
   Nuon verwacht dat huishoudens 40 euro duurder uit zullen zijn, klanten van Essent betalen naar verwachting ongeveer 30 euro meer. Dat stelden woordvoerders van beide energieconcerns, die in december de definitieve tarieven zullen vaststellen.
   
   De oorzaken van de stijging zijn de kernramp in Japan, het Duitse besluit om te stoppen met kernenergie en het aanjagende effect van de onrust in Noord-Afrika en het Midden-Oosten op de olieprijs.
   
   Inkoopstrategie
   
   De stijging bij Nuon is ,,de aanname op dit moment'', aldus een woordvoerster. ,,De inkoopperiode voor januari loopt van mei tot en met oktober. We zien dat de prijzen weer wat dalen. Eerder gingen we uit van een stijging van de kosten met 50 euro.'' Vooralsnog gaat Nuon uit van prijsstijgingen van 2 procent voor gas en 8 procent voor stroom.
   
   Essent gaat ervan uit dat gas 2 à 3 procent duurder wordt. ,,De prijsstijging van stroom zal lager zijn dan bij Nuon, dankzij onze inkoopstrategie'', aldus een woordvoerder.

   GasUnie en Gazprom tekenen intentieverklaring groen gas
   
   
   AMSTERDAM (Dow Jones)--Nederlandse Gasunie nv (NEG.YY), het Russische OAO Gazprom (GAZP.RS), de Russische Eurotechnika en BioGazEnergostroy Corporation hebben een intentieverklaring getekend voor de ontwikkeling van groen gas in Rusland, melden de vier concerns vrijdag in een gemeenschappelijk persbericht.
   
   De intentieverklaring is ondertekend tijdens de handelsmissie onder leiding van premier Rutte aan Rusland.
   
   Eurotechnika en BioGazEnergostroy Coproration specialiseren zich in respectievelijk landbouwtechnologie en biogasverwerking.
   
   Groen gas is tot aardgaskwaliteit opgewerkt biogas en geldt als een duurzame energiebron. Het doel is om de groengasproductie in Rusland verder te ontwikkelen en voor Europa beschikbaar te maken, melden de betrokken partijen in het persbericht.

   DEN HAAG (AFN) - De energie-intensieve bedrijven hebben vorig jaar hun energie-efficiëntie verbeterd met gemiddeld 1,4 procent, meldde Agentschap NL donderdag.
   
   Het gaat om de meer dan 1000 ondernemingen die met de overheid meerjarenafspraken hebben gemaakt om zuiniger met energie om te gaan. Ze nemen samen 80 procent van het industriële energieverbruik voor hun rekening en een kwart van het totale verbruik in ons land.
   
   De overheid streeft naar een verbetering van de efficiëntie van 2 procent per jaar.

    Imtech krijgt order van EUR77 mln voor energiecentrale in Polen
    
    
    AMSTERDAM (Dow Jones)--Imtech NV (IM.AE) heeft eind 2011 een opdracht van EUR77 miljoen ontvangen van Finalsa sa voor de realisatie van alle technische oplossingen in een afvalverwerkingscentrale in Polen, meldt de technisch dienstverlener woensdag.
    
    "De nieuwe order in Polen en eerdere recente orders voor energie-efficiente afvalverwerkingscentrales in onder andere Duitsland, Nederland en de UK bewijzen dat Imtech in dit segment in Europa leidend is," stelt Rene van der Bruggen, directievoorzitter van Imtech in een toelichting.
    
    De centrale die zal worden gebouwd in Warschau, Polen, kan circa 120 duizend ton afval per jaar verwerken. De centrale wordt compleet zelfvoorzienend in energieverbruik en zal daarnaast ook extra energie, restbrandstoffen en recyclebare materialen produceren.

    Alstom bags EUR 240 million deal for 1440 MW power project in Sweden
    
    Alstom Grid has been awarded a contract worth approximately EUR 240 million by the Swedish utility Svenska Kraftnät for the 1440 MW South West Link.
    
    The project will connect Barkeryd in central Sweden to Hurva in southern Sweden, using High Voltage Direct Current technology.
    
    The contract is registered in the third quarter of Alstom's fiscal year 2011-12.
    
    The terms of the contract
    This transmission project will use Alstom Grid's HVDC MaxSineTM Voltage Source Converter technology. Under the terms of the contract, Alstom will supply HVDC converter stations at both ends, as well as control and protection, converter transformers, switchyard equipment, construction and project management.
    
    The South West Link project is forecasted for completion at the end of 2014.
    
    Main Alstom units involved
    The main Alstom units involved in the project will be the HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford (UK), Västerås unit (Sweden) for sites activities and Paris unit (France) for overall project management and engineering.

    China faces greater pressure to ensure energy supply in 2012
    
    Xinhua quoted China energy chief said that the country is under greater pressure to ensure energy supply this year as both demand and international competition for resources grows.
    
    Mr Liu Tienan head of the National Energy Administration made the remarks when speaking at a national energy work conference that "It is always worrisome to have to sustain supply of energy and resources for a country with 1.3 billion people."
    
    Mr Liu noted as China is facing a grim situation in energy saving and emission reduction, it is urgent to restructure the country energy use and control the gross consumption volume this year.
    
    He said that to ensure a stable energy supply, China will optimize the layout of energy exploration, start construction of energy transmission projects and other major energy programs while boosting reserves of oil, natural gas and coal in 2012.
    
    Mr Liu said, in 2012, the country aims to provide electricity to another 600,000 people who currently have no access to it and expand electricity access to 5 million people by 2015.
    
    The NEA plans to add another 200 tonnes to the country coal producing capacity this year plus 70 million KW of new installed power generating capacity.
    
    According to the NEA if the ecology is protected and people are relocated, China will start construction of hydropower projects of 20 million KW in 2012.
    
    Once safety is ensured, nuclear power will be developed after the country new safety plan is approved.

    Minder gastransport door zachte winter

    GRONINGEN (AFN) - In het afgelopen jaar is er 102 miljard kubieke meter gas door het Nederlandse hoofdtransportnet gepompt, tegen een recordhoeveelheid van 111 miljard kubieke meter in 2010. Dat blijkt uit cijfers van Gas Transport Services (GTS), de transportdochter van Gasunie, die dinsdag zijn gepubliceerd.
    
    De topdag van het jaar was maandag 31 januari, toen er 468 miljoen kubieke meter gas werd getransporteerd.
    
    In het afgelopen jaar is de gasinfrastructuur flink uitgebreid. ,,De uitbreidingen zijn cruciaal voor het borgen van de leveringszekerheid en om een bijdrage te kunnen leveren aan de uitvoering van het gasrotondebeleid van de overheid'', aldus Gasunie.

    Groene stroom steeds gewilder

    ARNHEM (AFN) - Nederlandse consumenten en bedrijven gebruiken steeds meer groene stroom. Volgens netbeheerder TenneT is dat te zien aan het aantal afgeboekte certificaten voor duurzame stroom, dat het afgelopen jaar met 22 procent is toegenomen.
    
    ,,Dit staat gelijk aan het stroomverbruik van meer dan 1,5 miljoen huishoudens'', aldus TenneT dinsdag. Omdat aan het stopcontact niet is te zien wat voor stroom eruit komt, worden certificaten uitgegeven voor de hoeveelheid geproduceerde groene stroom. Die worden vervolgens afgeboekt, als de stroom daadwerkelijk is geleverd. ,,In 2011 steeg het aantal afgeboekte certificaten naar 33,5 miljoen.''
    
    In het afgelopen jaar werden 11,1 miljoen certificaten aangemaakt, tegen 10,7 miljoen een jaar eerder. ,,Het overgrote deel van de Nederlandse certificaten voor groene elektriciteit komt uit biomassa en wind'', aldus TenneT.
    
    Omdat de vraag naar groene stroom in Nederland de productie overstijgt, wordt veel uit het buitenland geïmporteerd. ,,Werden in 2010 nog 16 miljoen certificaten voor duurzame energie geïmporteerd, in 2011 steeg dit naar ruim 25 miljoen certificaten.'' Het ging voor het overgrote deel om certificaten uit duurzame elektriciteit uit Noorse waterkrachtcentrales.

    Greenpeace: Kolencentrale wel degelijk om te bouwen

    De kolencentrale die RWE/Essent bouwt in de Groningse Eemshaven is wel degelijk om te bouwen tot een milieuvriendelijke gasgestookte elektriciteitscentrale. Dat beweert Greenpeace vandaag op basis van een onderzoek door het adviesbureau CE Delft.
    Gasgestookte centrales stoten veel minder CO2 en andere schadelijke stoffen uit dan kolencentrales, aldus Greenpeace. Aan de hand van het rapport zegt de milieubeweging dat ombouw naar gas technisch en financieel mogelijk is.
    
    RWE/Essent bestrijdt dat. De huidige installatie afbreken zou een enorme kapitaalvernietiging betekenen van meer dan 2 miljard euro, aldus een woordvoerder. 'Het kan niemand verbazen dat wij daartoe niet bereid zijn.'
    
    De kolencentrale van RWE/Essent, aan de rand van de Waddenzee,wordt met een capaciteit van 1600 MW (goed voor 2,5 miljoen huishoudens) een van de grootste in Nederland.
    
    Energiemaatschappij Nuon besloot vorig jaar onder druk van de milieubeweging wel af te zien van een kolengestookt deel van de centrale die de elektriciteitsproducent ook in de Eemshaven bouwt. De bouw daarvan is echter minder ver gevorderd.

    ARNHEM (AFN) - Het elektriciteitsverbruik in Nederland is vorig jaar nagenoeg gelijk gebleven ten opzichte van 2010. Dat maakte TenneT, de beheerder van het landelijke elektriciteitsnetwerk, vrijdag bekend.
    
    Het verbruik kwam vorig jaar uit op 104.760 gigawattuur, tegen 104.478 gigawattuur in 2010. Het stroomverbruik liet vorig jaar aanvankelijk een stijging zien, maar was de afgelopen maanden langzaam aan het dalen.

    Fracking to grow to record levels in 2012

    The worldwide market for hydraulic fracturing will grow 19 percent this year to a record $37 billion, one-third the pace of expansion in 2011 after tumbling natural gas prices discouraged exploration for the fuel, according to Tulsa-based Spears & Associates Inc.
    In North America, which accounted for 87 percent of the fracking market last year, spending on the technique used to extract oil and gas from shale will top $30 billion in 2012, said Richard Spears, vice president of the firm that advises about 400 oil producers, hedge funds, equipment providers and manufacturers.
    Demand for fracking services in 2012 will grow slower than last year's 63 percent rate because of declining interest in searching for gas, which as recently as three years ago dominated the market, Spears said Thursday during a conference call sponsored by Credit Suisse USA Holdings Inc.
    "Natural-gas drilling has not grown, it's shrunk," Spears said. "All the growth is on the oil side."
    Fracking is the practice of pumping millions of gallons of high- pressure water, chemicals and sand underground to crack fissures in the rock so oil and gas can flow.
    Energy producers have expanded use of fracking to penetrate geologic formations from North Dakota to Pennsylvania that were overlooked for decades because they were too difficult to crack.
    Shale formations contributed to a boom in U.S. oil output that reached a nine-year high in October, the most recent period for which Energy Department data was available.
    In the U.S., horizontal drilling, the precursor to most fracking activity, is expected to rise to 18,600 new wells this year, breaking 2011's record of 16,100, said Spears, a former Halliburton Co. fracking engineer.
    About 73 percent of this year's new horizontal wells in the U.S. will be aimed at extracting oil, up from 12 percent in 2009, Spears said. The number of horizontal wells targeting gas will fall to 5,000 this year in the U.S., down from 6,000 three years ago, he said.
    Four companies - Halliburton, Schlumberger Ltd., Baker Hughes Inc.'s BJ Services unit and FTS International Inc., formerly known as Frac Tech Services LLC - provided more than half the North American fracking services last year, Spears said. Halliburton was at the top of the group with almost one-fifth of capacity, followed by Schlumberger with 13 percent, BJ Services with 12 percent and FTS with 11 percent.
    Fracking capacity in North America probably will expand 28 percent this year to about 18 million horsepower after growing 42 percent in 2011, Spears said. Capacity has more than tripled in the past five years, thanks in part to companies that previously didn't exist or didn't offer the service to oilfield customers, he said.
    The mid-continent region that includes Oklahoma dominated the North American fracking market last year with $5 billion in sales, Spears said.

    DÜSSELDORF (AFN) - De Duitse energiegigant Eon schrapt wereldwijd 11.000 banen, waarvan 6000 in Duitsland. Dat heeft het concern dinsdag bekendgemaakt.
    
    Eon hoopt op die manier tot 2015 voor 9,5 miljard euro aan kosten te besparen. Het bedrijf wil zo meer ruimte creëren voor investeringen. Eon moet flink reorganiseren, omdat de Duitse overheid in 2022 de laatste kerncentrale wil sluiten. De zeven oudste kerncentrales waren al na het ongeluk van Fukushima uitgeschakeld. De resterende negen kerncentrales worden de komende jaren gefaseerd gesloten.
    
    Het Duitse energiebedrijf zag de winst in de eerste 9 maanden van vorig jaar scherp dalen, vooral door de kosten voor het stilleggen van kerncentrales.

    Koninklijke DSM N.V. en POET, LLC, een van de grootste ethanolproducenten ter wereld, maken vandaag bekend dat zij in een joint venture de productie van bioethanol uit lignocellulose op commerciële schaal zullen demonstreren en de technologie in licentie zullen verkopen aan derden. Dit is een nieuwe stap in de ontwikkeling van biobrandstoffen, gebaseerd op door de beide ondernemingen zelf ontwikkelde, complementaire technologieën. De joint venture, POET-DSM Advanced Biofuels, LLC, zal volgens plan in de tweede helft van 2013 beginnen met de productie van bioethanol uit lignocellulose. De commerciële fabriek die daartoe wordt gebouwd is een van de eerste in zijn soort in de Verenigde Staten.

    DEN HAAG (AFN) - Van de Nederlandse huishoudens en bedrijven is vorig jaar 9,9 procent overgestapt naar een andere energieleverancier. Volgens de brancheorganisatie Energie-Nederland laat dit zien dat de energiemarkt in ons land goed werkt.
    
    In 2010 stapte 9 procent over en in 2009 was dat 11,6 procent. In 2004, het jaar waarin de energiemarkt werd vrijgegeven, stapte 6 procent over.
    
    Volgens Energie-Nederland is de energiemarkt inmiddels redelijk volwassen. Er is een verscheidenheid aan leveranciers en het overstappen levert nauwelijks problemen op. Bovendien blijkt uit recent onderzoek van toezichthouder NMa dat 98 procent van de klanten neutraal tot heel tevreden is over de dienstverlening van de energieleverancier.
