    Noda: To Take Decisive Steps On Forex If Necessary

    TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Japan's Finance Minister said Sunday that he will continue monitoring the markets and will take "decisive steps if necessary" to stem the yen's rise.

    In a local TV program, Yoshihiko Noda said Japan will also continue working closely with the Group of Seven countries in the coming few weeks.

    Annualized Real GDP Falls 1.3% In April-June Period

    TOKYO (Dow Jones)--The Japanese economy contracted for the third straight quarter in the April-June period, albeit at a slightly slower-than-expected pace, as the March 11 earthquake and devastating tsunami weighed heavily on exports.

    Real gross domestic product shrank 1.3% in annualized, seasonally adjusted terms in the second quarter after marking a 3.6% annualized drop in the previous period, government data showed. The outcome handily beat expectations for a 2.7% contraction based on the median forecast of 12 economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires.

    In on-quarter terms, GDP fell 0.3%, compared with a 0.9% drop during the January-March period, and a 0.7% fall expected by economists.

    Analysts say the contraction was mostly due to the April shock to exports and consumer spending stemming from damage to factories in the Tohoku region caused by the March 11 disaster.

    The data show exports fell 4.9% and personal spending lost 0.1%. Housing investment dropped 1.9% while inventories contributed 0.3 percentage point to overall GDP.

    A ministry official briefing reporters said government consumption rose on the back of reconstruction spending following the earthquake. He also said that while exports fell sharply, private consumption held up better than expected.

    Despite the negative figures, analysts aren't that pessimistic about the economy going forward because many parts of the economy are already making rapid recoveries. In the July-September quarter, Japan's GDP should expand, they noted.

    "The July-September data will likely show a fast pace of growth, reflecting recovery in consumption and exports," Mizuho Securities chief market economist Yasunari Ueno said.

    The stronger-than-expected figures helped push Tokyo shares higher with the Nikkei Stock Average up 1.3% at 9075.18 as of 0050 GMT. The dollar also rose against the yen, edging above the Y77 level. It was At Y76.99 as of 0050 GMT.

    But some analysts also said the picture was less certain, given the recent market turmoil and concerns of a double-dip recession in the U.S. and Europe.

    "While the July-September period also seems to be progressing quite smoothly, there is a growing uncertainty on the macroeconomic conditions in Europe and the United States," said Tsuyoshi Segawa, an equity strategist at Mizuho Securities.

    Nikkei Flat At Morning Close, Weighed By Strong Yen

    TOKYO (NQN)--Tokyo stocks ended the morning session higher Monday after moving narrowly at high levels.

    The Nikkei Stock Average rose 78.18 points, or 0.87%, to 9,041.90.

    The benchmark index opened higher following Friday's rise on Wall Street and on European markets.

    The gauge briefly climbed to 9,117, as investors bought back exporters, including Toyota Motor Corp. (7203), which fell sharply the previous week.

    But after buying ran its course, the gauge was dragged down by the strong yen, prompting selling on the topside.
