Goedenavond Appie,

Forget buy-and-hold, says Barry Ritholtz

Forget about the traditional buy-and-hold strategy, says Barry Ritholtz.
The investment manager, CEO of research firm FusionIQ and markets blogger says the classic strategy that served investors well in the bull market that ran from 1982 to 2000 no longer applies. In today’s MarketWatch feature Money Talks, Ritholtz says investors need to manage risk and preserve capital. A slow economy is taking a bite out of corporate earnings, and thus weighing on stock prices.
“People are starting to recognize that you have to price in some of these lower earnings,” Ritholtz told MarketWatch’s Jonathan Burton. “There was the expectation that the Fed would come to the rescue. The Fed isn’t coming to the rescue and whatever we’re looking at going forward is not likely to be a robust economy.”
Ritholtz offers five suggestions for investors: Be defense with stock positions, understand that bonds are still attractive, note that cash is king, be cautious in buying gold and don’t be afraid to trade.
