Geely Cool on Saab Interest
9 Oct 2011
Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, the Chinese car maker that bought Volvo last year, has no interested in taking part in the restructuring of Saab, but is not completely uninterested in the Swedish brand, Wall Street Journal reported.
Saab, which is under creditor protection in its home country, approached Geely through a third-party looking for help in its restructuring, the Chinese company said in a statement. The company was responding to a Swedish newspaper report last week that said it had shown a “genuine interest” in Saab.
Nevertheless, the fact that a meeting took place suggests that Geely might have some interest, a company official told Wall Street Journal.
Chinese car firms Pang Da Automobile Trade and Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile are waiting for approval from the Chinese government to partner with Saab.
Several smaller Chinese car companies have looked at buying or partnering with faltering Western auto brands in recent years, many with the intention or acquiring advanced technologies or overseas distribution networks.
