A better approach would be to establish some kind of protocol that allows blockchains to talk directly to one another. Ripple has created one such protocol, the now-open-source Interledger Protocol. But others are certainly in the works. Whoever can decisively solve this ledger interconnection problem will have accomplished something comparable to the invention of TCP/IP — the foundation of the internet.

In cross border payments today, a correspondent bank has a network of global banking relationships and accounts that it uses when it needs to effect a cross border payment. This can be expensive and slow, especially if the payment needs to go outside the standard corridors. Ripple sees XRP as a bridge currency that can eliminate the need for banks to have numerous global ‘nostro’ accounts, and by leveraging distributed ledger technology, it can significantly reduce settlement times. For this to work, there needs to be liquid markets in multiple XRP currency pairs, and there are already a number of market makers providing two sided liquidity in this market.

Whether XRP takes off as a bridge currency and whether this leads to a broader acceptance of cryptocurrencies, remains to be seen. What this does tell us however, is that banks aren’t completely against cryptocurrencies – if compliance concerns can be satisfied, then they are open to exploring any new technology that can reduce costs and improve workflow.

Q: How does Ripple seek to partner with banks?

Banks are not looking for cool technology, they’re looking for solutions. We think Ripple should be way at the bottom of the payments stack—so that means that partnering with banks is essential. Banks are the core custodians of value, so they’ll be the heart of the internet of value. We’re only going to do a little bit, which is good for us as a company, because then we can focus all of our people on what’s really changing. Banks can piggyback on that and improve their market position.

    ILP om de hoek!!

Q: What is the timeline for all this interconnectivity happening?

I think it’s happening now. I think 2016 is the year that we’ve seen the commercial productions now coming into play. My sense is that it’s going to be an avalanche effect: you’re going to see a cost advantage for the banks that create commercial products. They’re going to see new opportunities for new revenue, and at the same time, the integrations [for other banks] will get easier and easier. That’s a good dynamic now for adoption—and I think that has already started.

Japan’s $28 Bln Worth Internet-Based Conglomerate To Start Virtual Currency Exchange

As part of the agreement, Ripple and SBI are to explore ways to list XRP through SBI’s various online brokerage properties and among those properties is Japan’s leading online securities trading platform SBI Securities —which recently reached a milestone of 3.5 million accounts.

The SBI Group consists of 208 companies (as of September 2015) operating in approximately 20 countries and regions, in sectors including financial services, asset management and biotechnology. Its over 5,000 employees cover businesses including Internet banking, over-the-counter foreign exchange margin transactions, operation of Proprietary Trading System and international money transfer service.

As the blockchain hype cycle cools, bankers are also drawing other conclusions. One of these is that “the blockchain” is not going to emerge in industry as a single platform, as it was once imagined, but as a series of different blockchain platforms designed for different purposes.

As these platforms emerge, companies like Ripple will come to be seen as plumbers who maintain different parts of the financial infrastructure, according to Heimen Schuring of Rabobank.

What does the future look like? Alex Tapscott says it looks like something Ripple has envisioned and worked to create for years now: the Internet of Value.

“Fintech will transform the industry, but it also represents nothing short of the second generation of the internet. […] So what if the internet was entering a second era, from an internet of information to an Internet of Value?”

    FD:

    FlashFX Uses Ripple and XRP
FlashFX announces the launch of a brand new foreign exchange payments solution to improve foreign exchange in Australia. Built on Ripple and using its digital currency XRP for liquidity, FlashFX delivers transparency, near real-time settlement and transactional control to users, while cutting the cost of cross-border payments.

FlashFX is designed to revolutionize the traditionally complex and opaque process of these payments for everyone. It shares Ripple’s vision of the Internet of Value and the idea that making foreign remittances should be as simple as transmitting an email.

Nicolas Steiger, CEO of FlashFX, is looking forward to this future:

“We are excited to be part of the evolution in international payments processing. It’s about time that consumers and businesses saw a meaningful change in how money is sent across borders. The service provides an alternative for Australians who want to send a payment faster and cheaper than banks currently provide.”
FlashFX is the first Australian digital currency business to receive the Australian Financial Services License (AFSL) from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

According to the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC), Australia processes $50 billion a year in cross-border payments. Competition and cooperation between banks and money service businesses (MSBs) has become more and more important as FX corridors have grown.

FlashFX is leveraging its proprietary infrastructure with other licensed money service businesses in relevant payment corridors. They are actively seeking to expand the ecosystem and facilitate other payment processors becoming Ripple-enabled.

Flash FX invites interested parties to engage directly with them.
