Saab sales chief, Adrian Hallmark, resigns and goes to Jaguar

by Swade on October 19, 2010

    UPDATED

Bad news from Car Magazine overnight…..

Jaguar Land Rover today announced a raft of management changes. Phil Popham, currently MD of Land Rover, is global sales and service director; John Edwards, the European MD, becomes global brand director of Land Rover; Adrian Hallmark quits Saab and comes back to the UK as global brand director of Jaguar; and Mike Wright is new executive director of JLR (Jaguar Land Rover)

UPDATE: A release from JLR confirms the appointment, which is effective as of December 1st (Thanks Dave!).

Adrian Hallmark, joins the company as Global Brand Director, Jaguar. Hallmark, 48, who will have global responsibility for the Jaguar brand, joins Jaguar Land Rover from Saab Automobile, where he was Executive Sales Director; prior to this he held senior management positions at Porsche, Bentley and Volkswagen.

Adrian Hallmark’s appointment was the coup of the year when it happened, a great signal of faith in the future prospects for Saab.

His resignation after just seven months, then, has to be a cause for concern.

Maybe he simply got a Godfather offer from Carl-Peter Forster, the former GM Europe head who’s now CEO at Tata Group? Maybe Victor’s renowned work ethic and drive were a touch too much?

I sure hope it wasn’t simply a matter of some extra dollars per week. The Saab opportunity was a unique one, resuscitating an established and respected brand that had been so neglected. One would think a challenge like that would appeal to someone with Hallmark’s CV. It’d be interesting to find out.

Hallmark’s successor is yet to be announced, but I’m sure they’re hunting far and wide even as we speak. Whoever it is, they’ll have a tough job with big responsibilities. Hallmark was in the midst of establishing new Saab sales operations in China, Australia, Russia and a number of markets in South America.

“Not so fast” on future Saab 9-4x diesel and BioPower
by Swade on October 20, 2010

Yesterday, I wrote about the Norwegian version of the Saab 9-4x press release, quoting as follows:

    quote:

    schreef:

From August 2011, the 9-4X [will] also [be] offered to customers in Europe and the world at large. The engine range will eventually also include diesel engines, better adapted to a Norwegian tax regime than the powerful V6 petrol engines. In the Nordic countries will also BioPower engines currently being developed.
This gave us some hope that Saab might eventually fit a diesel into the Saab 9-4x, which is considered essential for the European market.

They may still do so, too, but that hope faded a little today.

Auto Motor and Sport have a reporter in the US, who’s over there to drive the General’s 9-4x sister vehicle, the Cadillac SRX. Seeing he was over there, he enquired about the diesel proposition and was told by one of the Cadillac people that there were no preparations being made for the fitment of diesel at the factory where both vehicles will be made.

Further to that, however, is the amendment of the Norwegian press release that was the trigger for this whole issue.

The paragraph that I quoted above has now been edited out of the release. It seems they must have been working from an early draft that slipped through the net (It happens more often that you would think).

So, all of you looking for 9-4x diesels (with more MPGiesels – thanks James May) – stand down.
    www.saabsunited.com/2010/10/not-so-fa...

Saab names former VW COO in U.S. as new sales chief

    Automotive News Europe -- October 27, 2010 21:11 CET

Saab has appointed Matthias Seidl, a former top executive with Volkswagen in the United States, as its new sales chief.

Seidl replaces Adrian Hallmark, who quit the Swedish automaker to become Jaguar's global brand director.

Seidl, 47, was chief operating officer for the VW brand in the United States from 2006 to 2007, reporting to Hallmark, who then was executive vice president of Volkswagen of America.

Seidl, who takes up his new role Jan. 1, is currently CEO of Michigan-based automotive consultancy API, a company he founded in 2009.

A German native and alumnus of Cass Business School, London, and Harvard University's Business School, Seidl joined Volkswagen AG in 1989 as an Area Manager in Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemburg.

He later held several senior executive positions in the sales organizations of VW and its Audi premium brand.

During 12 years at Audi, Seidl was a senior sales and marketing executive in the European and Asia-Pacific region prior to running the brand's North and South American sales region.

Seidl will be based at Saab's headquarters in Trollhattan, Sweden, where he will report directly to Saab CEO, Jan Ake Jonsson.

“This is a very exciting period for the company and I look forward to helping increase sales volumes and opening up new territories for the brand in markets around the globe,” Seidl said in a statement.

Jonsson said: “Over the next 12 months we will be launching two new products -- the 9-4X and the 9-5 SportCombi – and Matthias's contribution will be vital in optimizing the sales of these exciting new vehicles.”

2010: An amazing year for Saab ….. and it ain’t over yet
by Swade on October 28, 2010

This one’s for the skeptics, the non-believers, the ones who said that Saab could never make it past 2009 and the ones who say they’re not doing enough now.

Saab were at death’s door at the end of 2009. GM were trying to sell the company but it felt like precious little real progress was being made. One deal fell through. GM gave Saab a month to live and a liquidator was actually sitting in the CEO’s chair in Trollhattan, making plans to break up the company. A company rarely gets any closer to being dead without actually dying and all this happened after Saab went through the biggest corporate reconstruction in Swedish history.

The road ahead won’t be easy, but it’s worth taking a moment to look back and observe everything that Saab’s been through – and achieved – so far in 2010.

    ——

They made their first Trollhattan-built convertible in early January.

An agreement was reached to sell Saab to Spyker Cars NV on January 27. Don’t let that short sentence dissuade you from the gravity of that occasion.

They produced the final of the old series Saab 9-5 in February, gearing the plant up for the new series to come. The Saab plant in Trollhattan would now build the full 9-3 range – sedan, SportCombi, Convertible as well as the new Saab 9-5, with the new 9-5 wagon still to come.

The Saab sale to Spyker Cars was finalised on February 23 and I was fortunate enough to be in the room when it happened. That post was one of the happiest I’ve ever written in five+ years.

Victor Muller picked up his Saab 9-5 in late February and drove it home to Holland.

They showed off the production model of the new Saab 9-5 and basically announced “We’re back!” on the Saab stand at the Geneva Motor Show in early March.

Saab secured vehicle financing with GMAC, following months with no finance available during the reconstruction and sale processes.

They found, appointed and announced key recruitments such as Adrian Hallmark as Sales Director and Jason Castriota as Head of Design. Key appointments were also made in New Business and Purchasing.

After weeks of gearing up, Saab resumed production in Trollhattan and Number 001 of the new Saab 9-5 rolled off the line in March.

Saab released a new EcoPower edition of the Saab 9-3 convertible. Emissions and fuel economy were reduced by 7 percent, with no effect on output or acceleration.

All this time, Saab were still racking up test miles on the new Saab 9-5 before it’s commercial release. By April, they’d covered more a distance longer than 12 times around the world on European roads.

Jan-Ake Jonsson received the first of several business awards for the year, from the Western Swedish Chamber of Commerce.

Victor Muller and Jan-Ake Jonsson completed the Mille Miglia historic rally, gathering plenty of PR juice for Saab (and plenty of Italian food for Peter Backstrom) in the process.

Saab launched the new 9-5 for real, hosting the world’s automotive press in Trollhattan. I was lucky enough to be there and do a couple of Saab 9-5 road tests of my own.

In an important post-script to the sale and reconstruction, Saab finalised their composition agreement with creditors, writing down their debts by 75%. They also finalised the acquisition of Saab GB from General Motors in June.

Saab 9-5 apps were launched for the iPhone and iPad.

Saab hosted the 2010 Saab Festival in Trollhattan, Sweden, in July 2010. It was awesome. They created the Saabs United Award and gave the first one out at dinner on Saturday night.

Saab arranged new importers for various markets through the year, including Japan, Canada, Portugal, Australia and others.

Saab rejigged their TTiD range for the Saab 9-3, introducing new low-emissions TTiD engines that set a new benchmark for power from a sub-120g/gm engine. They also added the TTiD engine to the Saab 9-5 range, making it the first time TTiD would become available in combination with XWD.

At the Paris Auto Show, Saab showed of the Saab 9-3 ePower, their first all-electric concept vehicle. 70 test units will be released for use in Sweden in 2011.

In September, Saab announced the partnership with American Axle to form a new company, e-AAM Driveline Systems, which will develop and produce innovative new hybrid driveline systems. The first use of this new system will be on the replacement for the Saab 9-3 late in 2012.

The same month, Saab also announced an engine supply agreement with BMW to use their 1.6turbo engines in the replacement for the Saab 9-3.

Victor Muller was named Entrepreneur of the Year by Automotive News Europe at a ceremony at the Paris Auto Show.

Saab celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Erik Carlsson’s first RAC rally win with a new edition of the Saab 9-3 Carlsson.

The Saab 9-4x was announced to the world in October and will make its public debut in November at the LA Auto Show.

Following a short-lived appointment of Adrian Hallmark and his departure for a position at Jaguar, Saab acted quickly to appoint Matthias Seidl as his replacement as Executive Sales Director.

    ——

I don’t know about you, but that looks like a stellar year’s work for a car company, especially a car company that was basically dead back in January.

Speaking of January, the Saab Support Convoys are a notable exclusion from this list of 2010 highlights. This list is focusing on what Saab have achieved this year, not what was achieved this year by dedicated fans on their behalf.

As the headline says, the year ain’t over yet. Here’s to a spectacular finish!

Edmunds.com Readers Weigh In on New Saab 9-5

    November 01, 2010

    By Mark Holthoff
The last few years have been rough for Saab and the Swedish brand, now under the ownership of Dutch sports car maker Spyker, is by no means out of the woods yet as more bad news was reported just last week.

Still, the hopes of Saab owners, enthusiasts and company employees ride on the first complete makeover of the flagship 9-5 model in 13 years.

Will the new 9-5 help Saab find its way to surer ground? We asked the online community of shoppers and enthusiasts at Edmunds.com, and here's a sample of what they've had to say.

Readers love the looks of new 9-5. "I sat in this car at the LA Auto show, and I was very impressed," says griffilicious, calling the design "tight, futuristic and unique." Likewise, e36_guy tells us, "I saw the new 9-5 at the Minneapolis Auto Show recently, and I was blown away," calling particular attention to the car's "clean surfaces, sharp lines and interesting, not-yet-cliched little styling touches."

Interior details like the green lighting motif and heads-up display are frequently mentioned high points, and reader thedream21479 calls the cabin "undeniably stylish" while double_duece says it's "one of the coolest I've seen."

Even diehard Saab fans are pleased, including rick8365 who says, "I liked Saabs in the past, esp. the 99 and 900 series, but I haven't even looked twice in recent years; [however] this car has my attention. I love the style references back to those previous cars (including the blistered roofline above the windshield) that look unique yet modern here." Current Saab 9000 owner joliver4 remarks that the new 9-5 "reflects the design principles of the first 9000 better than the first generation 9-5 ever did."

A few aren't quite as enthusiastic, characterizing the 9-5's new sheet metal as awkward-looking from some angles. Reader xorbe says, "It looks like two different vehicles grafted together right at the middle - Saab up-front, and I don't know what in the back." Another reader agrees that it is "an awkward looking car especially in profile" but ultimately concludes, "It finally has its own identify now and is showing it boldly. I like that."

Disappointment in the new 9-5 tends to come from one of two sources. First is the lack of an available manual transmission in the U.S. car, at least at launch. Reader roar02ram notes that "a manual was universally offered in the Saabs of old... [and] really enhanced the whole sporty/quirky equation" - not to mention is "a missed opportunity to compete head-on with the BMW 535i and Acura TL SH-AWD," which both can be had with manuals.

Second, and probably more worrisome, is the sticker price, which starts at nearly $50,000 and has some readers practically apoplectic. "Seriously what are you guys smoking?" asks dc325ix, who advises Saab to rebuild the brand at a lower price point before going up against the likes of Audi and BMW. Reader cz_75 agrees, saying "Start out cheaper to encourage people to migrate into the brand or return to it."

Others are less hopeful, such as justinlink who jokes, "So you have to pay 50-large to have the dubious 'privilege' of driving a Swedish car made with outdated GM technology?" or jumplead who dismisses the 9-5 as "an overpriced car... in an overcrowded segment."

Reader saabgirldfw pleads, "If anyone at Spyker is reading... you MUST lower the price of the 9-5 Aero to bring buyers into the showrooms! American car buyers will buy what they see on the road. And if they don't see a new Saab next to them during rush hour, they're not going to think about visiting the Saab dealer before heading to the Audi, Mercedes or BMW lots!"

Several point out that, with $50,000 to spend, they'd probably drive off in a different car. "If I wanted a change of pace from the German midrange sedans, I'd be much more inclined to buy a Cadillac CTS or Jaguar XF," says tbone85, while ed124c contends, "It is hard to believe a BMW or Audi customer cross-shopping a Saab."

Still, reader chavis10 argues that "I could buy a stripped [BMW] 528i or [Mercedes-Benz] E350 at the same price," but would rather have "a more powerful and better equipped 9-5" and which also boasts "some sense of expression."

Saab appears to have just such a different-minded enthusiast in mind for the 9-5. Recently announced plans call for ramping up U.S. sales by about 200 percent over the next few years - ambitious, but the target is still just one-tenth of what rivals Mercedes-Benz and BMW are now selling. That would keep Saabs relatively rare in the U.S. by comparison and perhaps help to justify the 9-5's lofty price tag.

Saab does have at least one likely buyer in reader quijote_viggen, who says that "this new 9-5 looks very promising as my next purchase" because it appears to deliver both "the excitement that a Saab has always provided and the craftsmanship detail that Audi has always executed in the most stellar of ways."

On the other hand, notes calspecial68, even a "great looking car with a compelling case to match" may be "too little too late as GM has severely tarnished this brand's credibility."

And that's the word on the street.

Far from the black figures for Saab
    Updated 2010-11-01 13:59

Saab Automobile's sales are increasing in Sweden. But a better home market is not sufficient to reach management's target of Saab profit 2012th To achieve this requires a global sales increase of 167 percent.
Car sales in Sweden rose by 21.3 percent in October compared to the same month last year. Saab Automobile's rate of increase was even higher, at 51 percent.

Of course it is gratifying for the car manufacturer. Unfortunately, comparative figures are very low. According to Bil Sweden statistics Saab sold 588 cars in October last year and 887 cars in October this year.

Another problem is the U.S. sales, Saab's most important market. Industry site edmunds.com writes that last year's sales of 8,000 cars look like a good figure, considering that Saab just managed to sell 3216 cars in the first nine months. But the goal for this year is 10,000 cars.

To reach that goal, sales in the last quarter thus exceeding the previous three quarters overall sales by a wide margin.

It will be difficult, however, according to edmunds.com mentioning that the launch of the new 9-5 does not become an instant success. While 9-3: an sold in 1046 copies in September found only 72 new 9-5 room apartments home to an American customer.

Perhaps both Spyker CEO Victor Muller and the Swedish Government, as guarantor of the Saab EIB loans, to start getting nervous. Edmunds describes U.S. sales so low that it is barely measurable.

Before this year, hoping Saab management on total sales of up to 60 000 cars. Last summer was revised on hoping to 45,000 cars. In connection with Friday's report from the owner of Spyker, a new adjustment to the forecast for 2010, now stands at 30000-35000 cars.

Saab's CEO Jan Ake Jonsson said that the company can show zero results in a sale of 85 000 cars, and as Spyker CEO Victor Muller is still a profit in 2012 will apply.

If this year's sales reached 30 000 vehicles Saab needs a growth of 167 percent to reach breakeven. If Saab is up to 120,000 cars, which the company can show a solid profit, requires a growth of 300 percent.

During the first nine months, Saab sold 18 000 cars. The loss was 1.7 billion.

Saab Auto Aims at BMW, Audi With 9-4X Crossover, Muller Says
    By Ola Kinnander - Nov 15, 2010 7:27 PM GMT+0100

Saab Automobile, the Swedish auto manufacturer that supercar maker Spyker Cars NV bought this year, is challenging Bayerische Motoren Werke AG and Audi AG with its first crossover being unveiled in two days.

Saab, which will display the 9-4X on Nov. 17 at the Los Angeles Auto Show, aims for the model to reach annual global sales of 15,000 to 20,000 vehicles starting in 2012, about half of which would be in the U.S., Spyker Chief Executive Officer Victor Muller today said in an interview.

“It’s a very important car because this is the extender of our product portfolio,” Muller said by phone from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport as he was about to fly to Los Angeles. “This means we can capture and keep clients in our brand much more easily than ever before. That’s very, very important for us.”

The 9-4X, Saab’s biggest model, will compete with Audi’s Q5 and Q7 and BMW’s X3 and X5, Muller said. The crossover, which combines features of a car and a sport-utility vehicle, expands Trollhaettan-based Saab’s product line beyond the 9-5 sedan that went on sale this year and the eight-year-old 9-3 car. Saab is planning to have the 9-4X available in showrooms by May.

Spyker climbed 3.1 percent to close at 3.196 euros in Amsterdam trading. The stock has advanced 50 percent this year.

Saab, which General Motors Co. sold in February, lowered its full-year sales target last month, saying it aims to build 30,000 to 35,000 cars in 2010 instead of a projected 45,000 vehicles. The company has a target of becoming profitable by 2012, when it plans to sell 120,000 vehicles yearly.

    Main Markets

Marketing of the 9-4X will focus on North America and growth economies including China, Brazil and, “in due course, India,” Muller said. While the 9-4X will be offered in some European countries, including the U.K., its sales in the region will be held back by the vehicle’s size and the lack of a diesel engine, the 51-year-old Dutchman said.

“It’s too bad there’s no diesel in it for Europe” after a GM-provided engine didn’t meet its needs for the region, Muller said. The Swedish carmaker may seek another diesel- engine supplier for the 9-4X’s future versions, he said.

Saab hasn’t set prices for the crossover yet. The Audi Q5 and Q7 start at $35,200 and $45,700 in the U.S., respectively, according to the Ingolstadt, Germany-based manufacturer’s website. BMW’s X3 starts at $36,750 and the X5 costs $46,300.

“We have definitely looked very carefully at where Audi sits with the pricing of the Q5 and Q7,” Muller said. “We’re a little bit between the Q5 and Q7, and we have to make sure we are competitive with them.”

BMW will start selling a revamped version of the compact SUV X3 in the U.S. in January as the Munich-based luxury-car manufacturer, the world’s biggest, takes on Audi’s better- selling Q5.

Muller also reiterated that he’s optimistic about finding a partnership with another carmaker to make a smaller Saab- brand model inspired by the tear-drop shaped Saab 92 car built from 1949 to 1956.

“There are so many fruitful discussions ongoing, so I feel that one of them will bear fruit,” he said, declining to identify potential partners.

Saab seeking a few good partners
    By Sarah McBride

    LOS ANGELES | Wed Nov 17, 2010 7:15am EST

(Reuters) - The future of Spyker's (SPYKR.AS) Saab rests on finding more manufacturing partners and bringing down the number of cars it must sell to break even, its executives said.

The company hopes to cut costs by finding automakers to share vehicle platforms, Spyker CEO Victor Muller and Saab CEO Jan Ake Jonsson told the Reuters Global Auto Summit here.

The company is talking to potential partners, Muller said, but he declined to name any. Muller said the company is in talks with "a few" potential partners to share its new Saab 9-3 platform.

Jonsson said Saab's target is to break even at sales of 85,000 cars annually. But he said that the niche automaker currently needs "north of 100,000" vehicle sales to break even.

Saab aims to sell 80,000 cars in 2011. In November, the company lowered its 2010 production target to 30,000 to 35,000 cars from a plan in August to build 45,000 vehicles.

Muller said in 2014 or so, Saab would also like to introduce a smaller car that harkens back to the automaker's earlier teardrop-shaped models, but only if it finds appropriate partners.

The ideal car of this type would carry "the DNA of the original product" without seeming too retro, Muller added.

The automaker is also experimenting with an electric car prototype, planning to launch 70 or so next year to gather data about how such vehicles are used.

Muller thinks by 2020, no more than about 20 percent of cars would be battery-driven in some form including hybrids, plug-in hybrids and pure electric vehicles.

"Generally, we overestimate electric cars," he said. "The success of the electrical car by 2020 will depend on whether we come up with some technical breakthroughs in this technology."

Saab's new owner, Spkyer, will be hoping the new 9-5 impresses you more than the ageing 9-3. More than 200 of you reviewed the saloon, estate and convertible versions of the 9-3, giving it decidedly average verdicts.

The old 9-5 isn’t included because it’s no longer on sale, but even its ratings wouldn’t have lifted Saab off the bottom of our table.

Volgend jaar is alles anders. Maar hoe... dat weten we nog niet.

    Slecht nieuws:

    En nog meer slecht nieuws;
